January
1968 was a busy time for the youth; basketball teams were in full
swing.
Games were played at the Bobby James Gym.
The Methodist Men held a
father-son night at
its February 1968 meeting. The meeting was well attended, and a
good
time was enjoyed by all. February 11th, 1968, was Boy Scout
Sunday.
It was pointed out that 20 percent of the scouts in the Ouachita Valley
Council were in the Grace troop.
World Day of Prayer was
observed at Grace in
March 1968. Six Ruston ministers took part in the service.
Mildred McGehee presided. Later that month, a chicken spaghetti
supper
raised $460 for the MYF.
The Methodist Men were back at
it in April
1968. This time it was Ladies Night. The program was a
presentation
of Dr. Rickey's Hawaiian slides. The annual congregational dinner
was held on 19th April 1968. The program featured the choirs of
the
church giving a musical drama entitled "This is Your Church."
At the Annual Conference in
June 1968, Rev.
Harkins was appointed to Mansfield First Church, and Rev. Robert
Bengtson
was appointed to Grace. A welcome reception was held for Rev. and
Mrs. Bengtson and children, Sharon, Vickie, Karl, Debbie, and
Becky.
Youth Activities Week was held in June 1968. Following an
extensive
week of activities, a trip was taken to Lake Sharon Assembly and Six
Flags.
In July 1968, Boy Scout Troop
59 awarded 83
merit badges to 23 scouts. Don McGehee received his Eagle Award.
The first step toward
implementation of the
new United Methodist structure was taken when the WSCS members enrolled
in a special "Service of Celebration and Charter Meeting" during the
evening
service on 20th October 1968. Jean Lay was WSCS president.
In November 1968, Sunday School
teachers were
honoured at Rally Day. Church members celebrated the 18th
anniversary
of Grace with a basket dinner following the morning service.
In December 1968, Ray Holt,
missionary in the
Philippines, visited Grace and told of the work being done there.
On 15th December 1968, the Chancel Choir presented the Cantata "The
Child
of Bethlehem." Grace members participated in a service of Carols
and Candles at Wesley Chapel on Christmas Eve. The year ended
with
a Watch Night Service.
