Under
the leadership of Judge E. L. Walker, Rev. Doug McGuire, and other
interested
men and women, Grace Church had its beginning in 1950. On Tuesday
evening, 3rd October, six people met informally in the home of Mr. And
Mrs. Bill Hendrickson to hope and plan for the new church. The
following
Sunday, 8th October, approximately 70 persons attended the first formal
service in Reese hall on the campus of Louisiana Polytechnic
Institute.
The following Sunday, the first Sunday School was held. On
Sunday,
5th November, the charter of Grace Methodist Church was opened.
Eighty-three
persons signed on that first Sunday. The charter closed at the
end
of the month with 116 charter members. Hymns sung on that first
Charter
Sunday were "Holy, Holy, Holy", "I Love They Kingdom Lord", and "The
Church's
One Foundation."
Following the evening service
that day, the
Women's Society of Christian Service was formed. Mrs. W. S. Dean
installed the officers. Mrs. Dean was assisted by District
Superintendent
Rev. G. W. Pomeroy, Mrs. Pomeroy, and Pastor Doug McGuire. The
first
set of officers were: President - Mrs. W. W. Adams, Vice President -
Mrs.
Maurice Caraway, Secretary - Mrs. Audrey Howard, and Treasurer - Mrs.
Fairy
McBride.
The Board of Stewards held its
organizational
meeting at the home of Fletcher Baker on Monday, 13th November.
Officers
elected were Chairman - Fletcher Baker, Vice Chairman - Bill
Hendrickson,
and Secretary - Hal Barker.
The first Communion Service was
held on 10th
December, and the new congregation ended the year with a watch night
service
at midnight 31st December with a call to begin the new half century in
prayer and an attitude of new and whole-hearted consecration of Christ.
