CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CORNER

Please congratulate the following children on their perfect attendance in Sunday School for the month of February!

Ben Talpey                                           Eric Hall                                               Emily Talpey

And congratulations to Hannah Kenison and Lucas Phillips, who both proved that they could recite the Lord’s prayer by heart! Ms. Kary is available before and after church to hear anyone else who would like to get the Lord’s Prayer memorization award.

You can still get an attendance award, even if you’ve missed up to 3 Sundays. Also, if you’re out of town for whatever reason and can’t come to church, go to church wherever you are and bring me a bulletin as proof that you went, and that absence will not count against your total. If you have any questions about the attendance or the Lord’s Prayer memorization awards, call (782-3972) or email me (dce@auburnmethodist.org).

Please take the time to visit the different Sunday school classrooms on Sunday and take a look at the attendance chains. Every Sunday, each child adds a link to his or her attendance chain, and it is a visual reminder of how their faith grows every time they come to church.

Do you know your child’s Sunday School teacher? Please check out the continuation of our series of Sunday School “Teacher Features” in this month’s Beacon, where you can become better acquainted with the talented individuals that teach our children. This month, we will get to know Navana Routhier, Claire Ross and Simone Morin, who teach our 3 to 5 year-old class.

It is always appropriate to express gratitude for the church members who step forward to help with our Christian Education program. Is it possible that you have felt called to this important ministry? Please contact me, and we can talk about it!  I am available to meet with anyone; simply contact me and we can set up an appointment. I have both mornings and evenings available. Feel free to call me (782-3972) or e-mail me (dce@auburnmethodist.org) with questions, concerns, or to share ideas!

Thank you,

Ms. Kary

TEACHER FEATURE: Navana Routhier

Ms. Kary: What would you prefer that the children call you?

Miss Navana: Miss Navana.

Ms. Kary: How long have you attended this church, and how long have you taught Sunday School?

Miss Navana: Rick and I have attended since 1994 and I started teaching Sunday School in 1999(I think).

Ms. Kary: Tell us a little bit about your background.

Miss Navana:  I was born and raised in Maine but went to college in Boston and then in Maryland where I met Rick who was stationed at Patuxent River NAS.  While Rick was on deployment in Sicily, he was able to get orders to Brunswick NAS and we moved back to Maine in 1994.  Our small town of Leeds had very few day care options and I was ready for a change of careers. I opened a Day Care in my home in 2002 and earned my Child Development Associate in 2005.  I had been teaching Sunday School for a while at that point and thoroughly enjoy working with children.

Ms. Kary: Tell us about your family.

Miss Navana: Rick and I were married at UMC Auburn in 1995 and have 3 wonderful children - Drake, 14; Brianne and Zarin, 10.  Rick's daughter Lauren lives in Indiana and is 23 now.

Ms. Kary: Do you have any hobbies (other than teaching Sunday School, of course)?

Miss Navana: I enjoy reading and crafting and getting out of the house!

Ms. Kary: Why did you decide to volunteer to be a Sunday School teacher?

Miss Navana: I think I was a helper at first and then was asked if I'd like to teach the 3 and 4 year old class.

Ms. Kary: Is there anything else that you would like everyone to know about you?

Miss Navana:  I am very grateful to have a church family and I am happy to see my children grow up knowing all of you and building a strong foundation to their faith.

TEACHER FEATURE: Simone Morin

Ms. Kary: What would you prefer that the children call you?

Miss Simone: Miss Simone.

Ms. Kary: How long have you attended this church, and how long have you taught Sunday School?

Miss Simone: I joined the church about a year ago, and this is my first year of teaching.

Ms. Kary: Tell us a little bit about your background.

Miss Simone: I originally am from Farmington, and I moved down to this area when I was about 9, and I’ve lived in the Auburn/Lewiston area since then. I got married in 1970 and moved to Danville, and I’ve been there ever since. I come from a family of eleven children (including myself), and we’ve always taken in a lot of children, so my life has always kind of revolved around children. For the past 10 years, I have been a C.N.A., and I love taking care of the older people.

Ms. Kary: Tell us about your family.

Miss Simone: My husband Jay and I have 9 children altogether; two step-daughters, Charmaine and Tina, and seven of ours, Brenda, Timmy, Joey, Tracey, Jerry, Paige and Logan. We took in foster children for a lot of years, and I consider Kary to be part of my family as well.

Ms. Kary: Do you have any hobbies (other than teaching Sunday School, of course)?

Miss Simone: I love to sew, crochet, and read, and do things with kids. I also do machine quilting, and I like to do lots of things around the house.

Ms. Kary: Why did you decide to volunteer to be a Sunday School teacher?

Miss Simone: It’s a way for me to learn more about the things in this church. Time-wise, it works out well for me, because I don’t always have time to do the adult classes. And I also like to help out and be involved.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Every Sunday, the children will come into church with their parents; please feel free to select the age appropriate Children’s Worship Bulletin for your child, available as you enter the sanctuary. The bulletins have activities that center on a scripture reading from the day’s worship service. After the Moments with the Children, they will go out for their Sunday School classes. Please don’t forget your offering when you go out to Sunday School! We will continue to have families celebrate Holy Communion together on the first Sunday of the month, attending Sunday School classes after the conclusion of communion. Claire Cote directs our Children’s Choir, and practices with the children starting at 11:00am.

In April, the Sunday School theme is Paul. The children will be learning about the apostle Paul. Ask your child about what he or she is learning in Sunday School; take a look at the leaflet that goes with the lesson. And if you missed Sunday School, there’s a chance that there’s an extra leaflet that you could take and do at home with your child. Just see your child’s Sunday School teacher or contact me at 782-3972.

YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS

7th-12th graders: Come and join us for our Youth Group meetings this month, taking place on April 13th at the United Methodist Church of Auburn at 6:00pm, and on April 27th at the High Street Congregational Church at 6:00pm.

4th-6th graders: The Junior Youth Group will be eating April 20th after church. Please join us, especially since it will coincide with the church Birthday pot-luck celebration! And afterwards, we will have fun bowling at Sparetime Recreation, which will be an event open to both youth groups! Be sure not to miss it!

Acolytes

April 6: Drake Routhier

April 13: Hannah Kenison

April 20th: Brianne Routhier

April 27th: Lucas Phillips

JOINT YOUTH GROUP OUTING: LET’S GO BOWLING! Our next joint youth group event will take place April 20th from 2pm-4pm at Sparetime Recreation in Lewiston. The cost will be $4 per kid including shoe rental (thanks to the generosity of the United Methodist Women), and adults can join in for $8 including shoe rental. Kids can bring a friend as well, either in or out of the church, and the friend will also get the youth group rate (I was informed that groups are usually assigned 4 to a lane). The church carpool will leave at 1:30pm, and I would again greatly appreciate offers of parents to drive; please let me know if you would be willing to help out. While researching this event, I came across the free sign up for their “Kid’s Club,” which gets you a free soda each visit, as well as free shoe rental, monthly prize drawings and special events throughout the year. So if you like to bowl (or would just like a free soda when we go), sign up at this web address: http://www.sparetimerec.com/kidsclub.3.13

Please be sure to indicate that you are planning to come by putting your name and contact information (as well as if you will be bringing a guest) on the sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall or by emailing me at dce@auburnmethodist.org; there is a minimum number for the group rate. And of course, feel free to email or call (782-3972) with questions, concerns, or ideas for our next outing!
