CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CORNER 12-2007

Please congratulate the following children on their perfect attendance in Sunday School for the month of October!

Well done, and keep it up! There were quite a few children that almost made every Sunday in October; just remember that every time you make the effort to come to church, you are growing in spiritual knowledge. To illustrate this point, I would encourage everyone to visit the different Sunday School classrooms on Sunday and take a look at the attendance chains! Every Sunday, each child adds a link to his or her attendance chain. When we started in September, it didn’t seem like a lot, but already the chains are starting to get heavy! I can’t wait to see how long the chains will be in June!

It’s important to come to church, but every once in a while, it can’t be avoided; you have to miss, because you’re sick, or the family is out of town. Because of this, here are the exceptions to the attendance awards. Children who miss 3 or fewer Sundays will still be eligible for an attendance award. In addition, if you’re out of town for whatever reason and can’t come to church, go to church wherever you are and bring me a bulletin as proof that you went, and that absence will not count against your total. However, at the end of the year, any child who attended EVERY Sunday this year will receive a special prize!  If you have any questions, call or email me.

Every child who can recite the Lord’s Prayer by heart will also get a prize, in recognition of the recent sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer. So ask an adult to help you memorize the Lord’s Prayer, and you, too, can win!  (Hint: pay attention and you will probably hear people at church saying the Lord’s Prayer every Sunday!)

I am usually at church Tuesday-Friday from 9am until noon; and if you can’t drop in then, contact me and we can set up an appointment. Feel free to call me (782-3972) or e-mail me (dce@auburnmethodist.org) with questions, concerns, or to share ideas!

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Every Sunday, the children will come into church with their parents; please feel free to select the age appropriate Children’s Worship Bulletin for your child, available as you enter the sanctuary. The bulletins have activities that center on a scripture reading from the day’s worship service. After the Moments with the Children, they will go out for their Sunday School classes. Please don’t forget your offering when you go out to Sunday School! December 23, the Sunday before Christmas, will be a “Family Sunday”, where families will participate in the entire worship service together. We will be haviing Jesus’ birthday party that Sunday with a cake and presents. What kind of gift is fitting to bring the Christ Child?

In December, the Sunday School theme is Celebrate! The children will be learning about the Christmas story. Ask your child about what he or she is learning in Sunday School; take a look at the leaflet that goes with the lesson.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE

December 24th - 6:00pm

Children and youth will be involved with all parts of the service. If your child would like to have a special part, (such as a greeter, an usher, a liturgist, or to be a Christmas story character) please contact Ms. Kary by December 2.

NOVEMBER BEACON TRIVIA

Congratulations to Stan Rice and Betty Young, who completed the Beacon Trivia page for November and both got perfect scores! Here are the answers:

1.   Samuel (as a judge) appointed Saul to be King.

2.   David gets the credit for writing Psalm 23, saying God is like a shepherd, caring for us.

3.   Jesus was born about 2007 years ago!

4.   Jesus lived in the Middle East.

5.   John Wesley recommended that we take communion as often as we could, every day if possible. (Should our church serve communion more often?)

6.    The primary meaning of communion is all of the above; remembrance of Jesus, God’s presence with us, and communing with God and each other.

7.   Jesus is not the first person we know of to teach in parables. Parables were a common method of rabbinical teaching, and some are found in the Old Testament.

8.   Generally speaking, Jesus used parables to help people understand God's intentions and keep the authorities from understanding his own.

9.      0 parables are shared by Mark and Luke but not by Matthew. Luke has the most parables (39), and John has the fewest (2).

10.  According to the Gifts-Based Ministry class, all Christians have spiritual gifts!

Thanks to those who participated this time, and check out this month’s trivia page, due Dec. 15!
