CHRISTIAN
EDUCATION CORNER 11-2007
I
would like to begin my article for this month with congratulations! It is my
great pleasure to announce that the following young people had perfect
attendance at Sunday School for the month of September:

Grades 5 & 6 Grades

Well
done, and keep it up! Not only is it fun to come to church, but you learn a
lot, too. And if you didn’t make it to church every Sunday in September,
there’s always next month! Many times it’s so easy to say “I’m too tired” or
“I’m too busy” to go to church; but the effort you put into church is
definitely worth it. And don’t forget, at the end of the year, any child who attended
EVERY Sunday this year will receive a special prize! We will also have a prize
for every child who can recite the
Lord’s Prayer by heart, in recognition of the recent sermon series on the
Lord’s Prayer. So ask an adult to help you memorize the Lord’s Prayer, and you,
too, can win! (Hint: pay attention and
you will probably hear people at church saying the Lord’s Prayer every Sunday!)
Please
also read my articles about Sunday School, Thanksgiving Baskets, Youth Groups,
the Pot Luck Luncheon, and check out the Trivia Page! There’s always a lot
going on here at church; just take a look at the church calendar if you don’t
believe me. I can always use help, so if you have an open heart and willing
hands, let me know! I am usually at church Tuesday-Friday from 9am until noon;
and if you can’t drop in then, contact me and we can set up an appointment.
Feel free to call me (782-3972) or e-mail me (dce@auburnmethodist.org) with
questions, concerns, or to share ideas! Fan mail is also always appreciated, of
course. :P
Giving
thanks for all of you,
Ms.
Kary
SUNDAY
SCHOOL
Every Sunday, the children will come into church
with their parents; please feel free to select the age appropriate Children’s
Worship Bulletin for your child, available as you enter the sanctuary. The
bulletins center on a theme of the day’s worship service. After the Moments
with the Children, they will go out for their Sunday School classes. Please
don’t forget your offering when you go out to Sunday School! November 25, the
Sunday before Thanksgiving, will be a “Family Sunday”, where families
will participate in the entire worship service together.
In September, the children learned about the “House
of David”, finding out about David’s ancestors. In October, the children
continued with “Beginning a Nation”, learning about David himself. The
unit title for November is “In the Royal Palace”, continuing David’s
story as he rises to the throne and the story of King Solomon. Ask your child
about what he or she is learning in Sunday School; take a look at the leaflet
that goes with the lesson.
OCTOBER
BEACON TRIVIA
Congratulations
to Stan Rice (3/5) and Helen Shelton (3.5/5), who completed the Beacon Trivia
page for October! Here are the answers that you’ve all been waiting for: -Hannah was the barren woman who prayed
without making a sound; her prayer for a child was answered, and Samuel, her
son, was dedicated to the service of God in thanks. -Pastor Rich mentioned in one of his sermons on the
Lord’s Prayer that “abba” can be translated as “Our Father” or “Our Mother”. He also mentioned that it was
revolutionary to think of God in such a personal way when Jesus introduced this
prayer as the model prayer. -You
can find the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew
6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. The version that we as United Methodists pray is found in the King James Version of
Matthew 6:9-13. -
Boaz was the barley farmer who
married the Moabite woman Ruth, and became an ancestor of David. We
have been learning about David’s ancestors (the House of David) in
Sunday School.
-Charles Wesley was the
mysterious figure depicted in last month’s Beacon; we have been celebrating his
300th birthday this year by singing one of his many, many hymns each
Sunday.
Thanks
to those who participated this time, and check out this month’s trivia page!

POT-LUCK LUNCHEON

Please bring a salad, main dish, or dessert, and add
your name to the sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall. We would also appreciate
volunteers to help set up before and clean up afterwards. We will continue the
“family Bible study” at the same time as the luncheon. We will have questions
or quotes on the tables to encourage discussion among those seated together;
feel free to suggest topics for discussion when you sign up, and remember to
stay and help decorate the church for the Christmas season at our annual
Hanging of the Greens after you’re done eating!
THANKSGIVING
BASKETS – WHITE GIFTS
Every
year on Thanksgiving Sunday, we have a tradition of putting together
Thanksgiving Baskets, in order to share food with those less fortunate than us.
To help with this, the Sunday School will provide food items for our
Thanksgiving Baskets. Each class will be responsible for bringing in one type
of item. In accordance with an old church tradition, please wrap the food brought in with white paper, as you would wrap
any gift. The gifts of food will be collected during the service on
Thanksgiving Sunday, November 25th.
Here are the class food assignments:
3,
4, 5 year olds: pudding and pie mixes
1st
& 2nd Graders: cans of pumpkin pie mix
3rd
& 4th Graders: pie crust mixes, cake mixes
5th
& 6th Graders: boxes of quick bread mixes
7th
& 8th Graders: stuffing mixes

If
you happen to be an adult and you would like to participate in this important
local ministry, you may bring any of the above items on Thanksgiving Sunday
(wrapped in white paper) and the children will collect them at the appropriate
time.
