Dear Friend and Members of Court Street United Methodist Church:

It has been a really beautiful summer. However, as we are at the verge of having the schools become ready and active for fall, the summer seemed too short. I know that many of our friends and members have been on vacation for most of the summer. Now everyone seems to be returning to their “home turf.” The schools are having their open houses and orientation and the college students are beginning to find their way to campus and starting another year of learning. The area football teams are in the process of having their “two-a-day” practice sessions. In some areas of Genesee County, some of the leaves are beginning to turn colors. The fall has come – if not in the weather department – certainly in the calendar.
Our church is also beginning to gear up for the start of the fall program. Choir music is arriving in the mail. Church school materials are here. And, as I look at my own calendar, there are more things written in pen rather than pencil (the pencil is for the summer because many of the church meetings are either moved or cancelled because of the reality that many people are vacationing). Our custodians are getting the church ready for the larger demand for rooms. Heather Miller, our Christian Education and Youth Director, after taking a breath or two after Vacation Bible School, is gearing up for another exciting year in “Sunday School.” By the time this newsletter reaches you, the different choirs of our church will be in rehearsal and making plans for the church year.
I am looking forward to seeing and sharing in ministry with Court Street United Methodist Church when the program is in full swing. I am hoping that you are feeling that same anticipation and excitement as I am.
On Sunday, September 7, 2008, we will begin the fall program at Court Street. I want to extend to you my personal invitation for you to be here and to participate in the ministries and mission of Jesus Christ as we work and learn to have a deeper faith to impact our daily living and the world around us for God and for Christ.

See you in church!
Rev. Bob Wright

Fall Kick-Off!

Christian Education will be kicking off our fall season with a good old fashioned Ice Cream Social! We invite the congregation to join us after the service on September 07 for hot dogs off the grill, chips, fruit, and of course, an ice cream sundae bar! There will be lots of food, games and fun! One of the games will be a cake walk. So not only are we looking for people to join in the fun, but also anyone willing to bake a cake. We hope everyone will join us as we gear up for the fall season with food, fun and friends.

From Our Parish Nurse...
Exercise for a Better Brain

Dr. Peterson, an expert on the effects of modification on mood, advises checking with your doctor before beginning an exercise program. Start out with 15 minute sessions and work toward a goal of exercising at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Begin with moderate exercise, gradually increasing intensity until it’s as brisk as possible. When you are exercising properly, you should perspire, breath deeply and rapidly and feel your heart beating rapidly but still be able to carry on brief conversation. Many people under exercise rather than getting the vigorous exercise they need, so they don’t see big benefits. Workouts should be reasonably energetic. You should do what you’re physically able to do rather than push yourself. Research shows that exercise routines that involve both aerobic exercise and strength training provide the greatest cognitive benefits. Add some stretching and balance exercises to help with flexibility and coordination and reduce the chance of physical injury. Try for a variety of exercises to maximize brain benefit. Start your exercise program slowly and build gradually. Moderate aerobic exercises might include swimming, biking, rowing, dancing, gardening, doubles tennis, walking briskly on level ground, cycling, mopping or scrubbing, golfing without a cart, or playing volleyball. Vigorous aerobic exercises include jogging, hiking, skiing, climbing stairs or hills, and shoveling snow etc. The Chinese form of therapeutic exercise known as tai chi can be as beneficial to the brain as more traditional exercise forms. They can help improve physical and mental health while building the brain’s capacity for attention and focus, and reducing high levels of the hormone cortisol which is associated with stress.

CROP Walk

Mark your calendars for the annual Crop Walk on October 5th at 2:00 p.m. What a great way to spend a fall day walking for the hungry, representing CROP. Court Street Church has a generous heart and always comes through for the CROP walk. Each year some 2,000 communities across the U.S. join in locally-organized, interfaith walks. 25% of your donation stays in the Flint area to aid our neighbors in need. The United Methodist Church is a strong supporter of the programs of Church World Service. We join with over 35 Protestant, Orthodox, and Anglican denominations to provide sustainable self help and development, disaster relief and refugee assistance in some 80 countries. So let's make a difference in 2008! People helping people build safe and healthy lives. Won't you consider walking to help others in poverty or sponsoring someone who is walking. Sponsor sheets will be available beginning the first Sunday in September from Debbie Crowder.

A former pastor said "There's something about Court Street Church...something special." The warm look in his eye reflected his feelings.
It's the same "look" you will find in the smiles of generations of Court Streeters. There really is something special about Court Street Church.
Come and find out for yourself. You'll find a warm welcome and an active, mission-oriented community of faith. See if you don't agree
 "there's something about Court Street."
