Mission Statement

"In order to glorify God by bearing much fruit, Tuscumbia First United Methodist Church exists so that hundreds of people who live in the Shoals will become committed followers of Jesus Christ"

The following is Tuscumbia First UMC long range plan that was presented at the June 2009 meeting of the Administrative Board. This long range plan revolves around the Mission Statement above. The plan is broken down in two priorities, each with a set of goals to meet them.

FIRST PRIORITY: "Adopt a Street" Ministry.

  • A third worship service will be added to our Sunday morning schedule within a year. This new service will be a blend between the Awaken and the 10:50 services.

  • Each year there will be one big event to target those who are unchurched for various reasons. This year (2009) we are preparing for a worship experience during the Christmas season.

  • A new staff position will be established for the purpose of reaching those outside the walls of the church. This position will be a volunteer who has the gift of evangelism and desires to grow the church by thinking outside the box.

  • Within three years, a satellite church will be established that meets off our main campus.

  • The membership class will continue every other month led by Bro. Mike and Bro. David. In this class the plan of salvation will be offered.

  • The jail ministry on Monday and Tuesday nights for men and women will continue.

SECOND PRIORITY: To equip and deploy each believer for a significant ministry by developing their God-given gifts, talents and experiences.

  • A growth tact will be established within the church to allow people to grow in their faith. The tract will be set up along the lines of 101, 201, 301, 401. The first level will focus on different ways to connect within the life of the church. The second level will focus on learning, the third level on serving, and the fourth on leading. During the first quarter of 2010 we will put into place a plan to help people to see where they are in the life of the church and what the next step is for growth.

  • In the first quarter of 2010 a lay shepherding program will begin that will divide the church body into groups of 8-10 family units. Each group will be assigned a lay shepherd who will provide pastoral care for each family in the group. The lay shepherd will continue to doing four things - pray, be available, make regular contact, and be an example.

  • Through The Shepherd's Table service will be a continue to be a time of sharing the love of Christ with "the least of these". In addition to a hot meal that is served each Sunday at 12:45 p.m. and a worship service, handouts will be given at different housing projects about The Shepherd's Table ministry.

  • A revival will be held where a Spirit-filled evangelist will be brought in to lead TFUMC into renewal. The primary focus will be on those in the church being equipped with the power of the Holy Spirit so that we can do the work of the ministry throughout the rest of the year.

  • A family life retreat will be held each year designed to strengthen the family. The retreat will be on a weekend and conclude with a worship service on Sunday.

  • By the fall of 2011 the Sunday and Wednesday night activities will be interchanged. Wednesdays will become a time of worship after our evening meal. This middle of the week worship service will encourage and strengthen the believer. Sunday evenings will become a time for small group studies.
