Our Welcome to You
Welcome to First United Methodist Church of Tuscumbia. This church's roots go back
to 1820 when Circuit Riding Ministers traveled the area. In 1822, the same year
Tuscumbia took it's name, the Tuscumbia Methodist Episcopal Church was formally
organized. The church met in a small log schoolhouse on the hill by Big Spring
Creek. A new building was erected in 1826 at the corner of Dickson and 7th streets,
where the fire and police departments are now located. In 1907 the Ladies Aid
Society bought a house and lot here at Main and 3rd street. After a year of
construction costing $100,000, the new church was formally opened on June 26, 1926.
In 1961 the three story educational building was built adjoining the rear of the
existing church. In 2003, the Family Life Center was completed and dedicated.
What is Methodism...Methodism was formed in England in 1729 by John Wesley, who said
"A Methodist is...one who loves the Lord his God with all his heart, with all his
soul, with all his mind and with all his strength." The Methodist shows: a goal of
being faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. An example of sharing God through missions,
concern with social problems, emphasis on Ecumenism and belief in the grace and
forgiveness of God's love. We believe that full and meaningful life comes through
Jesus Christ. We extend to all the invitation to accept Christ and enter into the
fellowship of His people.
Our Purpose
Challenged by God's Word and equipped by the Holy Spirit to make disciples of Jesus
Christ by taking risks and changing lives, the purpose of Tuscumbia First United
Methodist is to be a worshiping, witnessing, and working community of believers in
Jesus Christ.
Through this Christian community and by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, we are
nurtured with warm and loving fellowship which enables us to reach out to others with
care and acceptance.
Together we will grow toward our full potential in Christ. This potential will be
realized through the personal commitment of church members and staff, thus producing a
beacon for Christ in Tuscumbia, Alabama, the nation, and the world.
