United Methodist Women - History

Trinity United Methodist Church is the second oldest Methodist Church in Mecklenburg County. Since the early 1900's, the women of Trinity have played an important role in the mission work of the church.

The first organized group met on Sunday morning in a corner of the sanctuary for a mission lesson, to discuss business and pay their dues to missions. The winter months were spent making and quilting quilts. They prepared and served many dinners consisting of chicken pot pie and turkey and dressing. The money earned from these projects was given to missions and to help with the furnishings and upkeep of the parsonage.

In November, 1968 we became the Women's Society of Christian Service. Sixty-six ladies signed the Charter as charter members. Mrs. Phyllis Alexander served as president during this time of transition.

Again in 1972 under the leadership of our president, Mrs. Ruth Perry, we made a smooth transition as we became a unit of United Methodist Women.

At one time our big project was our annual bazaar, then we had the Parade of Tables. Proceeds from these projects were used for our mission work.

Today we have seventy-one members making up our four circles. Mrs. Donna Stroupe and Kathy Ward are serving as Co-Presidents.

Four of our members have served as District Officers. Our members attend district and conference level programs, support mission projects and participate in the mission studies. In all our work we strive to fulfill the vision of United Methodist Women.

Our pledge for 2001 is $2,100.00 (this is paid to the District Treasurer), our total budget is $6,224.00. Over and above this pledge, we support Bethlehem Center, Children's Methodist Home, Henderson Settlement, Church Women United, Russian Ministries for Women, Crisis Center, Uptown Day Shelter, A Child's Place, The Relatives, Trinity Playschool, along with serving the needs and programs of our Church.

We invite and urge all ladies of Trinity to become a part of our organization. There are many things to do as we strive to fulfill our vision.

Each year we recognize women who have exemplified our purpose with a gift to missions and a Special Membership pin. In 1997 we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of UMW at our Mother-Daughter Banquet.

We are involved in many activities that support our vision as listed above. We also continue to study through Bible Study sessions.
