Pastor's Message:

Words to Live By:

"Stewardship of Time": If one lives to be 70 years of age which is the average person's life span: he/she spends: 20 years sleeping; 20 years working; 6 years eating; 7 years playing; 5 years dressing; 1 year on the telephone; 2½ years smoking; 2½ years in bed; 3 years waiting for somebody; 5 years tying shoes; and 2½ years for other things.

Does "other things" in our life include some time participating in serving in a church program? "I have no time for church activities." How often is that excuse used today? In this technological age of the 40 hour work week, easy transportation, push button appliances and pre-cooked meals - "I have no time". Yet - there seems to be time for everything else, for all forms of recreation; but for one's purpose in life as an apostolic Christian - no time. Time is one of the most important gifts given us by God. He has given it equally to all. It is our responsibility to use it wisely and well. And we can do so by dedicating some part of it to Bible studies.

"God Wants Our Best": Christ never asks for anything we cannot do. But let us not forget that he always expect and require of each of us the best we can do. The faithfulness Christ wants and approves implies the doing of all our work, our business, our trade, our daily toil, as well as we can. Let no one think that religion does not apply to private life. It applies to the way you do your most common work just as much as to your praying and keeping of the commandments. Whatever your duty is, you cannot be altogether faithful to God unless you do your best. To slur any task is to do God's work badly; to neglect it is to rob God. The universe is not quite complete without your work well done; however small that work may be.

History of Trinity United Methodist Church:

In 1774, Methodism came to Rahway through Reverend William Watters, who, at that time, served on the New Jersey Circuit. However, meetings were usually held in homes or on someone's lawn rather than in a church. But, in 1798, a board of trustees was elected and the history of First United Methodist Church begins here. In 1809, the first chapel was completed. In 1849, thirty-one members of the First Church decided to organize another church that was a more convenient distance from their homes in lower Rahway. This was the beginning of the Second Methodist Episcopal Church, with the first services held in Athenian Hall. In 1850, a building was erected at the corner of Broad Street and Milton Avenue (now the site of a Chevrolet dealership) under the leadership of Reverend Alexander Brice. However, the Pennsylvania Railroad Ws at ground level and was slowly creeping closer to church property. The decision to seek a new location was made, and the present site was chosen. In 1893, the first service was held in the new building. In 1895, the name of the building was changed to Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church at a dedication service by Bishop Cyrus Foss. In 1897, a parsonage was built next to the church, where the parking lot is today. In the 1930s, the name of the church was changed to Trinity Methodist Church. In the late1960s, the name became Trinity United Methodist Church. In 1954, the current pipe organ was installed and the choir loft was moved from the right side of the sanctuary to its present location, which has previously been chamber for the old organ. In 1956, the current parsonage on Bryant Street was purchased. In 1962, the old parsonage was destroyed and the education wing was constructed. In 1972, underground seepage of gasoline made our building unsafe for two years and worship was held in First United Methodist Church. For over one hundred years our church has remained a faithful tribute to God, and will continue to do so for many more.
