Later this year he will be in a Parade for the Swing of the Quad Cities. He will attend an afternoon game, get to go on the field, and be recognized. This opportunity is because of his participating in a reading program in which he had to read twenty-five pages per day for four weeks. This year he went on an all-day field trip to Springfield where he saw the Capitol Building, New Salem Village, and Lincoln’s Tomb. In addition to his school work and activities, he also enjoys spending time with his many friends at school. Someday Craig wants to pursue a career in science, perhaps as a medical doctor, a scientist, or a meteorologist.
Craig is also very active outside of school. He has been taking violin lessons for four months and is doing very well. His goal is to play at church. I know we will all be looking forward to this. Included in his collection are lightsabers, a Darth Vader helmet, posters, and coffee mugs. He has seen all the Star Wars movies and enjoys acting out the scenes. NEEDHAM, DARLENE
Darlene was born in Mercer County and spent her childhood there. She grew up on a farm and loved to ride her horse to her friend’s house. When she was eight her mother died and she lived with her father and three brothers until her father remarried three years later. Her step-mother had three sons. She attended a rural elementary school (at times only five in the school), three years at Aledo High School and graduated from Viola High School in 1941. Darlene started dating Lewis Needham in 1941. Their first date was on a motorcycle. A year later they were engaged. Soon after, Lewis went in the Army and spent time in Japan. While Lewis was in the Service, she worked for Herman Nelson Corporation. He was discharged in January of 1946 and they were married the next month. At that time Darlene had an apartment in Moline and they lived there for seven years. In 1953 they moved to Carbon Cliff where they built the house she is still living in. Darlene also worked for John Deere Spreader Works, Service Rubber, and Sears Roebuck. Darlene retired from Sears to watch her granddaughter, Abby, and later watched her other grandchildren while their mothers worked. Darlene and Lewis were married for 58 years. He passed away on May 4, 2004.
Darlene has been blessed with a wonderful family. She and Lewis had three daughters - Nancy, Connie, and Becky. Nancy lives with her husband, Bob Gardner, in Hampton; Connie lives with her husband, Bob Goettig, in Davenport; and Becky lives in Carbon Cliff. She has six grandchildren - Abby who lives in Silvis with her husband, Brian Weatherington; Andy Gardner in Hampton; Gretchen and Jason Goettig in Davenport; Chad Passman and his wife, Jennifer, in Silvis; Scott Passman in Carbon Cliff; and a great-granddaughter, Shelby, who lives in Davenport. Also Darlene has a large extended family living in the surrounding area. She enjoys spending time with her family and they have lots of get-togethers.
Darlene has been a member of the Carbon Cliff United Methodist Church for forty-six years. She has attended regularly and has been very active. She has been financial secretary since 1973; she has sung in the choir; has been on the Administrative Board; and has helped with Sunday School and Bible School. All of her family, daughters and grandchildren and great-grandchild, have grown up in the Carbon Cliff Church. In addition to church, Darlene was also active in the community being in the PTA and on the Ladies Fire Auxiliary.
Darlene and Lewis did extensive traveling. She has been in all 50 states at least once and has been to Mexico and Canada. They enjoyed traveling with Lewis’s sister and her husband and Miles and Eleanor Wallingford. On the Alaskan trip they flew to Anchorage, Alaska and then took a cruise ship down the inside passage. This was a very interesting trip as they saw glaciers and whales. While there they went all the way to Fairbanks and saw the Alaskan Pipeline. Her favorite places were Yellowstone Park and Niagara Falls.
When the girls were growing up, the Needhams had a ski boat and took vacations down at Kentucky Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. They loved to camp and boat on the Mississippi River islands. One of her most memorable vacations with the whole family was when they rented a forty-foot houseboat and ran up to Winona, Minnesota and back on the Mississippi. They didn’t have Jason or Andy at that time so there were just the nine of them. That was a lot of fun. They took a lot of family vacations after the girls married and with all the grandchildren. Several of the vacations were to Wisconsin, Kentucky Lake, and Missouri.
There were also some quite traumatic trips too, but the good Lord was with them each time and they came through it all pretty well. They were caught in the middle of a tornado on the Interstate in South Dakota; Lewis had a heart attack in Arkansas and had to have open-heart surgery; and last, but not least, they had a serious car accident in Georgia and totaled their car. Lewis was in the hospital for four days until they could fly back home.
In addition to traveling Darlene has enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing cards.
“I’ve had a wonderful life and I thank God every day for giving me such a wonderful husband and such a loving family.” We are very fortunate to have Darlene as a friend and as a member of our church family.
PETERSON-FRAZIER, MARY JANE
Mary Jane Peterson-Frazier has been Carbon Cliff’s pianist for five years. Seven years ago she participated in Disciple 1, a 34-week Bible study course. One of the requirements of Disciple 1 was to be a disciple for Christ and to serve the church for the next year. Mary Jane, with a little help from Pastor Charlie Sward, elected to fulfill this requirement by being Carbon Cliff’s pianist. She has now been a Disciple for Christ in this way for the past five years.
Mary Jane began her piano playing later in life. She was 55 years old when she began taking piano lessons and continued for the next five years. She took her lessons at Black Hawk with the purpose of learning to compose music. She also studied music theory and received her Associates Degree in music therapy. Music therapy is a method of helping people with physical and emotional problems through music.
Because of the high quality of her academic work, Mary Jane had the opportunity to go to London to study. She went with a group of other Black Hawk students and they stayed at the Student Center. While there she studied economics, British literature, and legends. She had the opportunity to see many interesting sites as they took trips all over England and Scotland. She felt the most interesting sites were Stonehenge, the Roman Baths, and the Firth of the Forth which was by the North Sea.
Mary Jane was born in Comanche, Iowa, but soon moved across the Mississippi to Hampton, Illinois. She and her two brothers and sisters grew up in Hampton and she attended and graduated from UTHS. In 1938 her mother died and she and her brothers and sisters were raised by their wonderful father. She later married Art Peterson and was married to him for 37 years until he died of cancer. She later married Duane Brown and was married for five years until he died of a heart attack. She has continued to live in Hampton. She is fortunate to have her family near-by. Her son, Wayne and his wife, Renae, live in Port Byron with their two daughters, Ashley and Andrea, who are seniors at Riverdale High School. They intend to attend Black Hawk College next year and at the present are undecided as to their majors. They are both interested in sports. Her grandson, Josh, and his wife, Erin, live in Sleepy Hollow, Illinois. They are both graduates of the University of Northern Illinois. Josh works for Menards and Erin will begin law school later this year. Her other grandson, Drew, is currently a student at the University of Northern Illinois.
Mary Jane has been a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She follows her grandmother who was a spiritual leader in the church for many years. Mary Jane has always been an active member. She was a Sunday School teacher for 15 years and was head of Hampton’s Prayer Partner Ministry. She currently tutors children during Hampton’s After-School Program. In addition to Disciple 1, which was mentioned earlier, Mary Jane has also completed Disciples 2,3, and 4.
Mary Jane still likes to travel. In addition to England and Scotland, she has also been to Canada. Her favorite place in the United States is Door County. She recently learned to crochet by taking the classes led by Carol Robinson. She also collects angels and all kinds of music.
We all appreciate Mary Jane’s beautiful music on Sunday morning. We are very pleased that she is part of our Carbon Cliff church family.
ROSS, HOWARD
Howard Ross has had a connection with the Carbon Cliff United Methodist Church for many years. He and his wife, Toni, were members of Aldersgate when they were part of the two-point charge with Carbon Cliff. Howard remembers playing softball with Bob Goettig and Lewis Needham. He preached at our church several times before the Parish was formed and has been a guest pastor many times since the Parish was formed.
Several years ago Howard and Toni were directed by God to enter His service by becoming pastors. They are both part-time local pastors and are involved in a course of study. They were attending classes at Mt. Vernon, but are now attending at Springfield. They are both working toward full-time pastoral ministry. They both will go where God sends them. They both enjoy working with smaller churches and Howard also enjoys working with the contemporary worship service. Toni is currently the pastor at Grace and Hampton.
Howard grew up in Geneseo and graduated from Geneseo High School. While in high school he played in the band and the Drum and Bugle Corps. After graduation he attended Illinois Wesleyan majoring in biology and chemistry. While in college he participated in a half-semester internship at Argonne National Laboratory and worked on an environmental impact statement for Three-Mile Island after the accident. His first job after graduation was at a lab in Chicago. He then worked at the Waste Water Plant in Davenport for six years. He currently works for the East Moline Water Plant and has been there for the past sixteen years as a chemist. Howard met Toni at the Geneseo Happy Joes. He saw her seated “across a crowded room” and tried to impress her by putting different things in his pop to cause various chemical reactions. The chemistry was right, she was greatly impressed, and they were married in 1984. And, she has continued to be impressed as they will soon be celebrating their 25th Anniversary.
Howard and Toni have been blessed with two wonderful children. Most of us know Nathan and Nikki as they have been active in the Parish for several years. Nathan is currently at Iowa State University where he is majoring in civil engineering with an emphasis on structural engineering. His goal is to design and build buildings. In addition to his studies he is a community advisor on his hall floor and also plays the drums with the Faith Spring Band for the Wesley Foundation Contemporary Service. He spent the past summer studying in Spain as he has a minor in Spanish. Nikki is a senior at UTHS. During her high school experience she has been very active in drama participating in every play either on stage or directing. She has been very active in the youth programs in the Parish. She serves on the Parish Administrative Board as the youth representative, is president of FISH (Fellowship in Someone’s Home), is involved with ROK (the Christian group at UTHS), and is a state officer in Rainbow for Girls. She hasn’t decided on a college, but she is leaning toward Iowa State. She wants to major in psychology and religion. Her career goal is to be a missionary, counseling inner-city youth in South Africa.
Howard has many interests in addition to his church involvement. He enjoys reading all kinds of books. His favorite is science fiction and his favorite author is C.S. Lewis as he combines the spiritual with the fantasy science fiction. He also enjoys movies and often finds ways of incorporating them in his message at our Church and at Starting Point. Howard finds golf challenging and is learning to play the hammered dulcimer. He and Toni are also both active in Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis.
Two years ago Howard had a life-changing experience as he was diagnosed with diabetes. He is now much more aware of his diet and exercises on a regular basis. He is also aware of the importance of physical discipline as well and spiritual.
Howard is looking forward to working with our church family at Carbon Cliff and to the things we can accomplish together. He feels it is important to listen to what we are doing and also to listen to our dreams and ideas for our Church. He wants to know our feelings and to help us relate to God on a deeper level. He believes it is important to serve not only those who can attend church, but also to those who can’t. His first Sunday he took Communion to Ethel and visited with her for quite a while. We at Carbon Cliff are looking forward to a meaningful and spiritually rewarding relationship with Howard and feel we are very fortunate to have him as our primary Pastor and a member of our church family.
ROWE, DOROTHY
Dorothy has spent her life working with and helping others. In 1954 she and her husband, Oliver, started working with foster children. They provided a good home for fifteen children for the next sixteen years until 1970. The children stayed at their home from 3 months to 7 years. One of their foster children, Pam, came to church with Dorothy last June. Pam now lives out of the area but comes to visit Dorothy every year. In 1987 Dorothy received the “Woman of the Year Award” from the Silvis/East Moline Optimist Club for outstanding work at the Food Pantry. Dorothy had worked at the Food Pantry for five years.

Soon after marriage she and her husband decided she should stay at home and be a housewife and mother. Warren was born in 1942 and Arlon in 1946. At this time they were living in Silvis. When Arlon graduated from High School in 1964 Dorothy went back to work at Montgomery Elevator in time study and payroll. Oliver retired from the Rock Island Railroad in 1974 and Dorothy retired in 1978.
Dorothy and Oliver made the most of their retirement doing what they enjoyed – traveling. They took three summer odysseys. The first began with a drive to Florida and then up the east coast stopping whenever they felt like it and going wherever they wanted. Each morning they would look at the map and decide where to go that day. The second centered on Las Vegas and the surrounding area. The third began in Washington State where their son, Arlon, was stationed. They also took a train ride to a city in northern Canada. In 1977 Dorothy and Oliver went to Hawaii to visit their son, Arlon. They stayed for three weeks and had a wonderful time.
Dorothy has a large family. She has the two sons (Warren lives in Arkansas and Arlon lives in Oklahoma), fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren with two more due in the near future. Her husband died in January of 2002. He and Dorothy had been married for 62 years.
