Welcome to the Tennessee Annual Conference The Board of Church and Society is charged with helping United
Methodists and others to live out Christ’s call to love our neighbor as
ourselves through action and advocacy. John Wesley, the founder of the
Methodist movement, recognized that the life of faith involves both personal
piety (acts of devotion and worship which further our love of God, AND social
holiness (acts of mercy and justice which further our love of neighbor). It
is the job of this committee to lift up social holiness by developing
programs which further understanding on how faith intersects with society,
and by promoting the United Methodist Church’s official opinions on a variety
of issues. These opinions are determined by the General Conference, a
representative body of United Methodists from throughout the world, who
gather every four years to discern where God is leading our church. The
General Conference is the only body that speaks officially for the United
Methodist Church. Their opinions are collected in “The Book of Discipline”
and “The Book of Resolutions.” The Social Principles, contained in the “Book of Discipline,”
represent the church’s best discernment on a variety of social issues. They
represent the guide by which the Board of Church and Society develops
responses to the issues of the day. We hope that you find this site helpful as you work at carrying out
Christ’s love in the world. --The Board of Church & Society of the Tennessee Annual Conference |
