Why should I go to church?
|
Good question!
Many people ask, “Why should I go to church? Can’t I experience God in my
own way?”
The answer to the second question is, “Yes. You can experience God in your
own way.” But… Christianity is unique from all other religions in that it
is the only religion that is congregational. That means that one of the basics
of Christianity is that it is shared with other people.
There’s an old saying, “Misery loves company.” And that's true; when we’re
down, hurting and lost, we want other people around — and that’s what a church
is: people who help each other out when they’re down and hurt.
On the other hand, imagine having something terrific happen to you, and not
being able to share it with anyone else. How frustrating that would be. A
church is a place of celebration, where you can share your greatest joys
with people who will celebrate with you.
Finally, the Bible says our relationship with God is tied to our relationships
with other people.
“If any
one says, ‘I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does
not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.
” (
1John 4:20 — RSV)
We must be with other
people in order to be with God — love other people in order to love God —
serve other people in order to serve God.

Taft United Methodist Church follows the Revised Common Lectionary
. The Lectionary is a list of weekly Bible readings that rotate
on a three-year basis. We just began Year A.
Each week's lesson includes readings from:
- the Old
Testament
- a Psalm
- an Epistle
(letter)
- one of
the four Gospels
Following this
challenges us to tackle a wide range of topics in our weekly sermon
and Bible study.
If you're interested
in finding out how this book written between 2,000 and 4,000 years
ago is relevant to today's life, visit us for a Sunday morning lesson.
We get together
at 11 a.m. on Sundays for a little music, some social time and our weekly
lesson.
