The first preaching in the Solomon Valley was by Bros. Hawley and Chilson.  Rev. Chilson resided at Salina and went to Lindsey every four weeks.

Lindsey, just 3 miles from Minneapolis, Kansas on the Solomon River, was the center for the Methodist Sunday School in 1865, at Fort Solomon.

In 1870, Bro. James Phillips was appointed to the Solomon and Smoky Hill circuit which extended from Lindsey to Detroit.  Later a class was organized in Solomon.

On May 28, 1870 a meeting was held in Solomon City, Kansas organized the Smoky Hill and Solomon Rivers Circuit.  Rev. G.S. Dearborn presided and appointed Bro. Isaac Thompson as class leader and Joseph E. Burkhart, steward.

The building which serves the United Methodists of Solomon was dedicated November 18, 1884 by Rev. W.H. Adams.

The history of our churches

Presbyterian

In 1866, Z.T. Blakley, a Licentiate of Madison Presbytery, came to the assistance of several Presbyterian families in Solomon and the first Presbyterian Church of Solomon City, Kansas was organized October 21, 1866.  This meeting was held in the dugout home of Mr. And Mrs. Henry Whitley who were Baptist.

Newton Blair was elected, ordained and installed Elder.  Blakley remained for some time and the first meetings were held in a building on the corner of Main and Poplar, the building being used as a store, post office and residence.

In 1869 the meeting place was changed to the schoolhouse at the corner of Main and Walnut.  At this time the Baptists organized a church and the combined churches organized union Sunday School.

In 1871, the Church was chartered, trustees elected and a building constructed on land donated by the Kansas Pacific Railroad.  In 1910 funds for the present building were started with the women of the church saving the money from their Sunday eggs.  Construction began on the basement July, 1921.  The basement was used until 1923 when the church was completed.
