UMW Luncheon at Annual Conference:
Border Ministries in the Southwest Texas and Rio Grande Conferences

Southwest Texas United Methodist Women are invited to the annual UMW luncheon during the SWTX Annual Conference session on Saturday June 8, 2013, at 12:15 p.m. in the Water Garden A room of the American Bank Center, 1901 Shoreline Drive in Corpus Christi.

The cost is $22 until May 22, $25 between May 23-31. Very limited tickets may be available after May 31 at the caterer's discretion. The reservation form can be downloaded here or contact Joyce Elaine Fish, Registrar, at jfish@mygrande.net or 361-992-1344.

Deaconess Cindy Andrade Johnson is the keynote speaker. She will share her experiences in justice ministries, including ways to partner to support ministries with the poor, visitation ministries, Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON), domestic violence, and advocacy for those on the margins.

Cindy was born and still lives in Brownsville. She has been married to Mike Johnson for a wonderful 22 years. She has worked for Brownsville ISD as a teacher for 29 years. Cindy has served on her local, district, and Rio Grande Conference United Methodist Women mission teams. In 2010 Cindy was United Methodist Women Kyung Za Yim Public Witness Intern for Immigration and Civil Rights (named after a former national president of United Methodist Women). While working as intern, Cindy coordinated efforts to mobilize United Methodist Women in advocacy and public witness for immigrant rights. She helped to organize the Assembly Action and other parallel UMW public witness around the country. Cindy has led workshops on how to plan a public witness and how to get involved in detention ministry. In 2012 Cindy was Rio Grande Conference lay delegate to General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference.

Currently, Deaconess Cindy is involved in a detention visitation ministry and JFON in South Texas. In the 2012-2016 quadrennium Cindy is serving the South Central Jurisdiction UMW on the Committee on Nominations. Additionally, she is a member of the South Central Jurisdiction Committee on Investigation and Episcopacy and of the General Board of Church and Society. Cindy is a member of El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church in Brownsville.
