ABOUT  US

·        Our community

·        Our congregation

·        An invitation

OUR COMMUNITY:

Swissvale is a small borough with a land area equivalent to about one square mile.  It is situated on   the eastern boundary of the City of Pittsburgh, on the heights on the northern shore of the Monongahela River.

In the one-mile radius, centered on our church building, there are 17,000 people (2005 estimate).  The average household income within this radius (2000 census) is $48,500.

Nine churches are contained within the borough’s borders.  Roman Catholicism represents the   single largest religious choice of the residents of Swissvale.  The borough possesses a healthy business community.  Braddock Avenue, which runs through the borough, is a major artery for the region.

OUR CONGREGATION:

We are part of the Pittsburgh District in the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference. The congregation was established in 1892 (six years before the borough was incorporated). Indeed, our history reflects a typical life-cycle for a mainline Protestant church in the Twentieth Century. We  are now trying to redefine our congregation for the Twenty-first Century.

Our theological stance is moderate, remaining biblically grounded. The congregation is welcoming.  Our church maintains a high profile in the local community. We are active in mission and outreach,   and regularly support projects in “our own backyard.”

We have sold our large old building and as of November 1, 2009, we have moved into a commercial unit. Clearly, it is a non-traditional space. We are in the process of remodeling and molding our space as we go along. We are future-oriented.

We have much to do and realize that success is not guaranteed. But, we faithfully place ourselves    in the hands of God.

AN INVITATION:

We are a welcoming, tolerant body of Christian believers. We invite all who seek relationship with  God through Jesus Christ to share in our congregational life. As we redefine our congregation,   upgrade our technology and change with the times, we need and welcome people who are willing to participate in this process. Whatever your motive might be; unsure seeker or established believer, once-fallen-away or die-hard saint, new resident or old-timer…up or down…in or out…we have room for you. Come and visit!
