Richard Whetsell Rev. Richard Whetsell is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church serving as pastor of Soldotna United Methodist Church in Soldotna, Alaska in the Alaska Missionary Conference. ”My mission is to help the people of Soldotna, Alaska to find a safe place to be encountered by the presence of the risen Christ,” Rev. Whetsell shares. ”Through the leading of worship, preaching the Good News, teaching the Bible, and sharing life experiences, I want to enable, empower, and equip people to live lives of significance, meaning, and value.” Richard recalls a time in which he felt God moving him toward this ministry, ”My first trip to Alaska was an Oklahoma VIM trip to New Hope UMC in North Pole, AK. Even though it was only September, it snowed every day for the eleven days we were there, and the beauty, power, and mystery of God’s good creation just overwhelmed me. That trip was so life changing that it led me to lead seven other VIM trips to Alaska over the next thirteen years. During those trips my love and enjoyment of the Alaskan residents grew until I finally decided we just needed to move to Alaska. As the state of Alaska has the lowest rate of religious affiliation, I feel particularly called to the challenge of building the kind of relationships with people which will enable them to connect with the church.” |
