On June 16th, 1879, a small group of five people were organized into the Newton Mission Evangelical Association that held services in borrowed space.  As this congregation quickly grew, ground was secured and a church was built on land that is now the center of Main Street just south of First Street.  This building was dedicated September 21, 1879.

Due to a severe wind and rain storm in September, 1882 the church roof was carried off and the walls fell.  The church was rebuilt on the old foundation and the new dedication was held July 13, 1883.  There was a financial boom in Kansas in 1886-1887 and the City of Newton wanted to extend Main Street on south.  City officials met with some of the church officials who offered the church members two lots and a good six-room house at the corner of First and Old Main in exchange for the lots on which the church stood.  An agreement was reached and the congregation moved the building to the new site and used the newly acquired house as the parsonage.

In 1912, a new brick church was built which was the foundation building for the church today.  An educational building was added in 1960 and in 2000 a Family Life Center was started.  This latest addition was completed in 2002 and now servers as the location for the Contemporary Worship Service and many group activities.

From 1879 to the present time Salem United Methodist Church has undergone many changes and persevered through reconstruction and relocation to the present site. What began as a one-room structure in which both worship services and Sunday School classes where held, has grown to encompass a sanctuary, chapel, eleven classrooms, nursery, fellowship hall, and family life center.  We would like to invite you to become part of Salem's rich history and bright future.
