HISTORY OF SAINT PETER UMC

Saint Peter Methodist Episcopal Church was founded during the latter part of
the 19th century.  The present property was purchased on June 10, 1899.  The deed contained the names of W. D. Bryon, Martin McCaulley, William Collier, Sallie Mastin, G. L. Love, R. M. Love and James Toney.  A frame structure was built and the founders and members worshipped there until it became too deteriorated to occupy, around 1923.  It was torn down and the Rev. L. G. Fields then pastor, built first a parsonage using the lumber from the old church. A new church was built which stood until 1989.  During the winter in the 80's, worship was usually brief.  One cold night in 1988, Rev. Chester Brown and Paul Owen, conference staff officers, held a kick-off meeting to build a new church.  They preached, motivated and pledged their support.  After more than 60 years in the white frame church house, the members of Saint Peter UMC embarked upon a journey of faith to build a new structure.  The new facility shown on the front page was completed and  service began in the spring of 1989.

Down through the years Saint Peter UMC has been involved in community and civic causes.  In the 50's, the church building was used for public school  classes until a new school could be built.  During the 60's, civic meetings were held to address the issues of the day.  Voter registration training was held weekly and members used their own cars to transport citizens back and forth to Huntsville to register.  Even after congress passed the Voting Rights Act in 1965, Saint Peter continued to host community meetings.
