Why Is It The Lamplighter?

Our newsletter has been called The Lamplighter since at least 1980. It is one way we let our light shine in the world so that others might see it and come to know Christ.

We are Biblically urged to let our lights shine. For example, Luke 11:33 tells us, No one after lighting a lamp puts it under a bushel basket, but on a lampstand so those who enter may see the light.

The motto of The Lamplighter is "Let your light so shine..." This comes from the King James version of the Bible, Matthew 5:16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Or, as paraphrased by the Message Bible: Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand — shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

We pray that our light may shine brightly and help us fulfill our mission of connecting people to God through Jesus Christ.
