I am very pleased to welcome you to the website of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in historic Newport, Rhode Island and I look forward to welcoming you personally at St. Paul’s on 12 Marlborough Street. My official title is Reverend Rebecca Baumann, Pastor, but I much prefer simply Pastor Becky.
At the request of the St. Paul’s members for a full time pastor, I was appointed by the Resident Bishop of New England, Bishop Peter Weaver. I arrived at St. Paul’s in July of 2008, having served in churches in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Together, the church members and I are creating a vibrant church fully committed to the ideas that have guided my growth within the ministry.
I believe that all persons are called to be in ministry within the world, within the local neighborhood, within a workplace, as well as within the local church. I love serving in this local church where I am able to work with a diverse group of people who bring a variety of gifts to the local church community. As a Christian, I see my journey with Christ as an opportunity for empowerment and enlightenment to those who suffer. As a United Methodist, I embrace social holiness and Christian witness as defined by the general rules of John Wesley (founder of the Methodist movement): Do no harm, Do good, and Stay connected to God.
I believe that building church community is essential to church growth. As persons gather together for worship and social justice outreach, the development of community is a natural progression within the life of the local church. In today’s world, many persons have been harmed by the institutional church. My desire is to help all persons realize a renewed sense of family unity within the church. Spiritual healing and reconciliation occur within the local church community as we gather for worship and fellowship and social justice outreach.
My home is the church parsonage on Ayrault St. in downtown Newport. Spirit, my wonderful nine year old Springer Spaniel, adopted at the New England Springer Spaniel Rescue a year ago, shares the parsonage with me. We both look forward to welcoming you at the parsonage in the near future.
I invite you to contact me if I can be of help to you in any way. I may be reached by the following means:

St. Paul's Sanctuary
In 1840. the members of the church, deciding they needed a parish hall, the entire St. Paul's church building was jacked up. A parish hall was then built underneath the raised church. The resulting church arrangement, with the sanctuary on the second floor, remains as it was rebuilt over 150 years ago.
