Community Support at St. Paul's

St. Paul's is pleased to be able to host a number of groups which serve the community of Newport and its neighboring towns. The church building's location in the heart of downtown Newport makes it an ideal meeting place for the many community organizations to which it offers its facilities.

To get an appreciation for how important St. Paul's is to the community, reflect on the following:

  • Each week at least 80 to 100 soup kitchen meals are served to the needy out St. Paul's kitchen, and served in its Olney Room.

  • Every Monday evening  30 to 60 teens, members of Y2Y (Youth to Youth), gather in the basement of St. Paul's educational wing.

  • Every Tuesday morning, a Play Group, via Sullivan School, meets. This serves families with small children. Sometimes there are 10 or more parents and their children.

  • The following 12 Step Meetings are held at St. Paul's each week:
            AA - every Monday to Friday morning;
            AA - Saturday morning;
            AA - Saturday evening;
            NA - Sunday evening;
            AA - Wednesday evening;
            DA - Thursday evening.

  • Every Second Tuesday of each month, Insight, a support group for the visually impaired, meets.

  • The Newport Housing Authority is starting to use Barber Hall to provide a community space for "get-togethers" for the residents in the housing units behind St. Paul's since the residents have no community space of their own.

  • Music Together, a music program for toddlers, meets Wednesday through Friday all day each week.  The same organization provides Family and Prenatal Yoga Tuesday evenings and Shake Your Soul dancing.

Listed below are the names of many of these organizations. Each name is linked to a page in this website (click the name of the organization of interest). There you will find specific information on that organization.

St. Paul's Steeple

St. Paul's Steeple

St. Paul's Church is believed to be the first Methodist Church in the world to have a steeple. Folk lore has it that on spotting the steeple, the local bishop lifted his hands with Holy horror and predicted that a church which began with a steeple would end with a choir, and perhaps even with an organ.

We believe that we are called to...

 ...Welcome all regardless of background, lifestyle and ability, celebrate our diversity and claim our unity, accept other as we find them, or as they may become....

     ...Serve our neighborhood, our country and our world, minister to those of every life stage, mend the broken and heal the hurt....

... Be a safe space and a quiet corner in a troubled, weary world.
