St. Paul’s Memorial United Methodist Church

The most notable feature of St. Paul’s is the 30 ft. x 18 ft. stained glass window of St. Paul preaching on Mars Hill in Athens.  It is in this piece that the character of Clem Studebaker was immortalized by Mayer & Company of Munich, Germany, who designed all of the stained glass windows in the church and are known for their work on the stained glass in the Vatican.

The spacious Sanctuary of St. Paul’s church is marked by two Gothic vaults and mahogany arches and can seat up to 600 people.  An 18’ glass dome in the center of the space adds a decorative element to the Sanctuary, allowing light to flood the space below.

The pipe organ that sits on the altar of the church was designed by the Bennett Organ Company of Rock Island, Illinois.  It is made of approx. 1800 solid gold leaf pipes and is encased in a mahogany frame.  The largest pipe is sixteen feet and the smallest three-eights of an inch.

The altar is decorated by six paintings of archangels, copied from the paintings of Fra Angelico, and depicts the musical instruments of the Bible.

Clem is pictured in the blue robe.

Off the Sanctuary is a small chapel, perfect for smaller weddings.   This chapel was constructed in 1958 and has three windows depicting the Prodigal Son..
