St. Paul’s Memorial United Methodist Church

Christ surrounded by the gospel writers (balcony window)

Matthew surmounted by the symbol of the Winged Man, portrays the human nature of Christ. Mark, as the Lion, represents the strength of Christ. Luke, as the Ox, denotes the sacrifice of Christ. John (the beardless one), as the Eagle, indicates the divine nature of Christ.

On the right side of the Sanctuary is the ancient baptismal font presented by Mr. J.M. Studebaker in loving memory of his brother, Mr. Clem Studebaker.  It is believed to be the oldest baptismal font still used in the United States.

Studies made of the font ascribe its workmanship to “The Cosmati”, which is a group of Roman marble workers from the 12th and 13th centuries.  The material was probably quarried from the ruins of ancient Rome.

The original information of the church ascribes this font to the Church of St. Cecilia in Rome, built on the side of the home of Cecilia before 499 A.D. and rebuilt in 821 A.D.  This woman was a noble lady of Rome who became a convert to Christianity and suffered martyrdom about 230 A.D.  She is buried in the catacombs of Calixtus. Because of her love for music she is considered a patron of church music.
