Church History

The Village of Stoneham was settled
about 1830, when Texas was still a part of Mexico, by colonists
brought to Texas by Stephen F. Austin. Settlers traveled on horseback
and wagon to worship with the Plantersville Methodist Church. Stoneham
United Methodist Church was formed in 1885, meeting in a nearby
school house and led by circuit riding ministers. In 1893 the present
frame sanctuary was built by the parishioners.
The Church flourished except during the periods of 1940-1945 and 1960-1973. The structure even survived a fire
in early years which was put out by a bucket brigade of neighbors. Services were reactivated in 1973 and the church
continues to provide the area with various services welcoming saints, sinners, and all those between.
