St. James United Methodist Church

The St. James Shield
Jesus chose three of His twelve disciples for special training; James, John, and Peter.

James was the elder brother of John; their father was Zebedee and their mother was Salome, sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus. James was a fisherman on the sea of Galilee in partnership with Andrew and Peter.

Called one of the "Sons of Thunder", James was rebuked by Jesus because of his fierce anger (Luke 9:54). At another time, James received the indignation of the other disciples for his ambitions (Mark 10:35-37).

James was one of the first of the disciples to be called. He incurred the enmity of Herod Agrippa I; and became the first of the 12 disciples to be martyred. (Acts 12:2).

The three escalloped shells on the shield reflect the three pilgrimages James made during his life. The internationally recognized Cross and Flame logo of the United Methodist Church reminds us of our Connectional relationship. The colors remind us of our social responsibility.
