St. John United Methodist Church began approximately in 1852. It was known as Holly Run Mission. The Church was located on Old Annapolis Road near the Little River, in Anne Arundel County (site of the Nursery Road Light Rail Stop). The church was built of brick inside and out, one small room, with a dirt floor, benches without backs seated the first members- all fifteen of them. Since there was no regular minister, local preachers came to substitute. In 1873, seeds were planted that would lay the foundation for a larger church building. The membership worshipped in the building for forty-eight years before saving enough money to purchase property on Brooklyn Road (currently Belle Grove Road). The new church was changed to Holly Rum Methodist Church. After the church was completed and the cornerstone laid the name as changed to Saint John Methodist Episcopal Church. |
