    REPORT -- NOVEMBER, 2009

    Not Too Hot for Camping
September was a very warm month but the promise of a monthly outing was on my mind. A new and very excited Scout kept asking if we were going camping since he had heard the Troop was not able to secure our original scheduled campground. Thankfully, good old Firestone Boy Scout Reservation, one of our favorites, came through in the end.
Even though this camp ground recently experienced a very damaging fire known as the Freeway Fire of 2008, it still has plenty to offer a true camper. The Scouts seemed oblivious to the once green hill sides and focused more on their well-learned Scout tasks of setting up camp and patrol kitchen areas. They also enjoyed a three mile hike to an area with a cool obstacle course giving them another extra challenge.
Cooking was our outing theme this month and while it was pretty warm during the day, the evening temperature was just right to devour homemade Dutch oven recipes from two of our patrol kitchens. The adults also enjoyed cooking and eating a decent pot roast dinner.

    Calico - 2009
This October, the Troop headed to a campground that is rarely popular with adults in the Troop, but it continues to be voted in each year by the Boy Scouts. Some could say that Calico Ghost Town, past Barstow, is too far, too hot and a tourist trap with too many temptations for the boys to overload on candy. Although all of this is true, when you think about it, this outing is also a good opportunity for the Scouts to test their Scout Skills and practice the Scout Law.
I was impressed with how quickly our Scouts worked together to pack the Troop trailer for our Friday evening departure. This also gave us a chance to set up camp in record time. After cooking breakfast and cleaning up the next morning, the Scouts worked together using several different knots and hitches to construct a huge dining fly that helped shade our meal area. This also gave us an area to work with the new Scout’s rank advancement requirements. The more senior Scouts worked on building a trebuchet (similar to a catapult) that gathered many young spectators from surrounding campsites. We even had time for a compass reading game before we all hiked into Calico Ghost Town.
Walking through the “Old West” town reminded me about how hard life must’ve been back in those days. It also made me believe that, just like our Troop, it required the community to work together as a unit so that they could live comfortably in the challenging desert environment.

    Want to Join Scouting?
All boys between 11 and 18 years of age or in the 6th grade and up are eligible. Meetings are held each Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall. Please call Scoutmaster John Vasquez @ 714-667-0780 or (johnvasquez@juno.com) for information. For the younger boys, there is a Cub Scout Pack sponsored by the church and for all girls, there are Girl Scouts. Please call the church office for information and phone numbers.

    Newspaper and Cardboard Recycling--
Anyone can help Scouts by saving and recycling newspaper with Troop 28. Rich Baughman brings his white stakebed truck to the church parking lot for anyone to load on newspaper. Cardboard needs to be flattened, and put on the truck next to the newspaper truck. The troop donates 10% of the proceeds to the Minister's Discretionary Fund. The balance helps the Scouts in many ways. A Scout can add money to his personal Scouting fund by recycling and reporting the feet of paper to Mr. Baughman.
