NOVEMBER
FROM YOUR PASTOR:
It was a cool yet wonderful fall morning as twelve of us from St. Paul made our way up the mountain to Chimney Rocks. We made it down too! I had been hoping to do something like this at St. Paul for some time and finally got around to it. As I was putting my boots on early that morning before we left home, I got to thinking about all the places those boots had been. It was a moment of sheer grace and gratitude.
I purchase a pair of boots about every ten years. They seem to last me about a decade before wearing or rotting out. My current pair is just about shot. They had been to Chimney Rocks before as well as many other places for pleasure and ministry.
This current pair of boots has been kept in three different garages. They tend to be dirty and often have a not so pleasant odor so I think it best to keep them in the garage. In ministry they have made it through about 15 work camps from North Carolina to the Gulf Coast, held me fast to rooftops and pushed me through the muck under a mobile home, saw me through some cold nights on the streets of York feeding the hungry and homeless, kept me walking upright with youth and other church folks on other hikes, supported me in several CROP Walks, kept my feet dry when in the wet grass gleaning apples for the food bank, accompanied me on church retreats where I walked with others on holy ground. These boots have been blessed to share the journey of this past decade with many brothers and sisters in Christ with whom we shared a season of life and ministry together.
As my sock appears through a hole in one of my boots, I guess it is time to get another pair. Be assured I will follow my motto, ‘never pay retail.’ Beginning my fourth decade in ministry, I wonder if my soul and body will outlast another pair of boots. I may wear out before they do. Yet while putting my boots on this morning, the gift of that moment brought much encouragement.
I am thankful for many things in these days. For the changing of the season, for the love of a wonderful wife and blessed family, for those who share this journey with me at St. Paul in these days, for those who crossed my path in the past, for the ministry of Christ that brings much joy.
I am trusting too, that something will cause your heart to well up with gratitude in these days. With Thanksgiving approaching, we affirm the secret of Paul in Philippians chapter 4, “to be content and to give thanks in any and all circumstances.” If you hear of a good sale on boots, please let me know. I’m going to need some for the next part of my journey.
Gratefully,
Pastor Noll

Dear St. Paul Family and Friends,
Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. –Isaiah 40:1
Is there a place that you go when you are feeling sad, discouraged, frustrated, or just overwhelmed with all that life is throwing at you? I hope each of you has a place like that, for we all need a place that gives us that sense of comfort. Maybe it’s a place that has fond memories, a place with close friends or family, or a place that you just feel especially close to God. Wherever it is, I encourage you to go there regularly to be refreshed and renewed….and comforted.
We took a trip to Greene Hills Camp near Huntingdon just today. While it was supposed to be a day of service and ministry, it ministered to me today. It became one of those comforting places for me. The camp there has many fond memories for me and my family. I can remember work camps, retreats, youth events and moments of real connections with Christ. As I looked around at God’s creation--the mountains, the valley, the river, the changing leaves—I couldn’t help but feel His presence as I walked down the path that connects the retreat center and camp. It wasn’t because my life is not going well right now. In fact, I am feeling especially blessed lately. We all get so busy rushing around, though, often doing really great things for God. I was reminded today that I, too, often fall into the trap of doing more than being. Sometimes we are just called to BE in God’s presence, to BE a child of God, and to BE comforted.
If you continue on in the 40th Chapter of Isaiah, you receive yet another assurance of comfort. For in those next verses comes a promise, and we live on this side of the fulfillment of that promise. We have received the blessing that was promised in the person of Jesus Christ, sent to us as our Savior and Redeemer. If your life is going great or if you are going through really bad times, we all can be comforted by the knowledge that Christ came to save us. Praise be to God!
In His Service,
Pastor Lenore

From the Youth Director
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrew 12:2 KJV
The recent tragedies in our community have brought about a lot of unanswered questions, pain, anger and confusion to a lot of people. While it startles the mind it puzzles the soul (yes, even leaders have their doubts at times); it is hard to understand how anything positive or good can come from such heartache and pain? Two young lives have been lost; countless others are left behind with questions of why so soon? These are the types of questions that drive theologians crazy. No one has an answer. All I can tell you is how I dealt with it and how I deal with these types of things in my own life.
When I was a senior in High School we had a similar thing happen to us - a prominent student was suddenly killed in a motorcycle accident. 17 years old, he had his life in front of him. Our student body was stunned. One of the saddest things I have in my memory bank is that of Paul’s mother walking the steps to receive his diploma at graduation. This led me to really consider my eternal destiny. The questions in my mind were if I were to leave this earth by an early appointment, who would have the glory in that - God or Satan? I wrestled with that and many other questions until September 1989 when I decided to fully follow Christ. From that time on images of Paul and his last conversation with me burned in my mind, and they are a warm memory. But, a couple of realities were about to change for sure. One, life is brief and no one knows when “when” is! Two, the rest of my life was going to count for something. Three, Jesus was God! He sits on the throne; He’s not surprised at the latest turn of events. Now, if I sound a little preachy here, well that is just fine with me - I make no apology.
Friends, our community, our youth, our parents, our leaders are dealing with some hard life situations right now. We can ignore them, laugh at them (not a suggestion), or run away from them because we don’t have the answers… or we can simply rely on the fact that Jesus is our God.
The best way to do that is to look into His word and see what it has to say to us. I love the idea the book Major United Methodist Beliefs has to say about the Bible. “This book guides us through this present life and opens the doors to the creative advances of the future in the life after death (Major United Methodist Beliefs, 30).”
So when these hard events hit home to you, remember the Bible is your guide, God is still on the throne, and the only thing you can change is tomorrow.
God Bless,
Jason Crawford

TOYS FOR JOY
This is a request from the Toys For Joy project. The project will be making bracelets for young people utilizing wood and beads and has need for any broken or retired beaded costume jewelry or any loose beads. Anyone willing to donate any beads or beaded items may bring them to the 9:45 AM contemporary service, church office/reception area or may contact Jeannene Mitchell (263-1528) or Larry Sweene (263-6110). We are always in need of new ideas and the “decent wood” supply is running very low. Everyone is welcome to be a part of the project by donating any amount of time to help with toys. No experience is required and there are expert trainers to help you fulfill your wildest toy-making dreams. Be a part of this project -- there is nothing in the world like the laughter of a young child… or the smile of a person who knows others care.

Seeking a closer relationship with God?
Don’t go it alone. Join a small group.
Small groups will be forming in the near future. Watch your weekly bulletin inserts for more information.
Jesus tells us “Where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” Matt. 18:20
It is in the small group setting that we see Christ in the faces of those who journey with us as we share our joys and struggles together. In caring for one another, we experience the transforming love of God in our hearts and grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. Small groups practice the means of grace: doing good, avoiding evil, worship, Bible study, fasting, Christian conferencing, Holy Communion, and prayer. These are Spiritual disciplines that help draw us closer to God and to one another. As we practice these disciplines in community we are strengthened and encouraged to reach out to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick, visit those in prison, shelter the homeless and welcome the stranger. Consider joining a small group!
Contact Darlene Coldsmith @ 263-0133 or dccoldsmith@embarqmail.com for more information about small groups.

On a Shirley Ringer motion seconded by June Plummer Church Council accepted the Pastoral Budget for 2010 recommendation presented by the Staff Parish Relations Committee.

United Methodist Women: Linda Strickler expressed her thanks for everyone who helped with the recent UMW annual yard sale and its success. UMW gave 15% of the proceeds back to the church for electricity usage and such instead of the usual 10% normally given. Church to plan a fall festival to be held on October 31st. This event will be a fun-filled evening including hay rides, a bon-fire, food, and various games celebrating the fall season. It is Jason’s hope that we can reach out and invite youth from all area United Methodist churches.
Youth Representatives: Randy shared with Council that October 18th will be Youth Sunday with the youth conducting all three worship services sharing testimonies and mission project information. Randy also reported that the Conference Council of Youth Ministries is holding a “Great Escape” weekend on November 20-22nd. This event is for youth from sixth to twelfth grades being held in Camp Hill and will include guest speakers (including our own Ken Poper) as well as music, a band and fellowship.
Pastor Lenore: Pastor Lenore reminded us all to remember all the local people in need in our community and shared the difficulty of determining who the Pastor’s Discretionary Aid Fund money should be given to. Pastor Lenore also shared how well the Chambersburg HUB center being housed in our church is flourishing with very faithful support from our congregation and community. Pastor Lenore shared her concerns in establishing more active small groups and ways to get more people involved in Sunday School classes and small group Bible studies. She plans to keep offering activities and studies and encourages the sharing of any ideas to meet the congregation’s and communities’ various needs.

A Different Way of Celebrating Christmas
The story of Christ's birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love. So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists. And when it's all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose. Is this what we really want out of Christmas? What if Christmas became a world-changing event again? Welcome to Advent Conspiracy. Join us for a time of study beginning on Wednesday, November 18th at 6:30 in Room A-7.

Blogging Bible Study with Pastor Lenore at
http://pastorlenore.wordpress.com/
We are pleased to share that the startup of this new study group has been very positive. There are people of all ages and stages and from many places that have joined together in reading our first book, A Thousand Splendid Suns. For those who are interested in joining us, you might want to begin with the next book, Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. This book is available at Target or through Amazon, and I will have a few copies here available on a first come-first serve basis. Beah's book is not for the faint of heart, but it is sure to be both educational and thought-provoking. He writes of his experiences trying to survive as an orphan in Sierre Leone, eventually serving as one of the notorious "boy soldiers" in that region of Africa. Check out the blog on the church website or at http:// www.pastorlenore.wordpress.com if you might be interested or if you would like to join in.

WORLD THANK OFFERING
St. Paul United Methodist Women will be collecting the annual World Thank Offering on November 15 as part of the Affirmation of Stewardship at all three services. The World Thank Offering is an opportunity for personal thanksgiving and mission outreach. Through the years, mission has been the main focus of United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations. Being in mission is sharing our lives and gifts with others so that all may be whole persons through Jesus Christ. Mission is creating new persons and a new society as we do away with those things that create barriers or cause separation. Mission is Christ’s challenge to us to bring the possibility for food, shelter, and fulfillment to all of humanity.
Through World Thank Offering contributions, mission projects are supported in all 50 states and in almost 100 countries. These projects vary from support to schools, hospitals and clinics, day care centers and homes for senior citizens to educational training courses to prevent soil erosion, leadership development, sewing and nutritional courses, and medical training. The number of persons reached by this type of caring and sharing is almost incalculable. (http://gbgm-umc.org/umw/100years.html)
Please use the specially marked envelopes that will be in the bulletins for November 8 and 15 or note in the memo section of your check that it is for World Thank Offering. Make checks payable to St. Paul UMW.

This mission is for ages 12 and up. See Pastor Noll if you have questions.
