Our Motto: Enter to Worship; Depart to
Serve. Our Church's motto is inscribed over the doors to the
sanctuary. It is our hope that everyone who passes through these doors will be
inspired to greater service for the Kingdom of
God. Our Church Mission
Statement:
Sparta UMC is a family of those who proclaim the Good
News of Jesus Christ and serve all God's people in our community and around the
world.
Located in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of western
North Carolina, Sparta is a small but growing town surrounded
by mist-shrouded peaks and woodlands, in an area renowned for its folk
museums, artesans, and folk music festivals. The church has served the people of
this area since the 1800s, and continues to assume a central role in the
life of the community today. In addition to our missions around the world,
we believe in actively reaching out to local people who are in need and
suffering, through programs like our winter wood project, 'secret Santa', summer
lunches, and through services provided by the Alleghany County Ministerium,
a consortium of area churches joining hands to support our local
communities. Members of Sparta UMC enjoy a close sense of fellowship nourished
by numerous church events including youth programs, church choir, bible studies,
missions groups, family nights, a monthly Fellowship Supper, and
the annual Homecoming and Mountain Heritage Festival, among others.?>
As a church family
we are also there for each other through life's joys and sorrows, visiting our
friends that are homebound, bringing meals to families in crisis, and
celebrating births, graduations, and marriages. We recongise that each person
has a unique voice and unique gifts to share in God's work, and seek to cherish
diversity as a source of strength within our congregation. In our continuing
process of growth, we strive to nurture fresh, new ideas and youthful
enthusiasm as well as to heed the circumspect voices of age and
experience. We believe we have a responsibility to help take care of God's
Creation, and work towards being good stewards of our world by exploring
and practicing more sustainable ways of living and worshipping. Because we
believe in teaching by example, we strive to fulfil these goals and
expectations within ourselves first, knowing that our example may become a guide
to others whose hearts and hands are joined in the same
work.
Whether you are
young or old, rich or poor, a visitor or a new resident, a life-long Christian
or a new seeker, we invite you to worship with us. Bring your questions and
your burdens into the peace of our sanctuary and let the Lord's
grace illuminate your life. Join us in service, pray with
us, and get to know us over a Mission Meal. We look forward to
sharing with you our spiritual home.
We'd love to share more about our church with you and your family! If you are in the area please stop by and share worship with us, or visit us and explore some of the wonderful opportunities we offer for worship and fellowship, or learn abot our missions work here and around the world, through the links below.
