           I.  Fellowship Groups

Card Club

Purpose: Social

Participation: Adult singles and couples;

Schedule: Every second Friday of the month throughout the year at 7:30 p.m.; individuals may attend any or all of the Fridays as their time allows.

Activities: Any card game; examples include Pitch; Bridge; etc.

Hors d'oeuvres and drinks are provided by hosts.

Where: Participants rotate hosting in their homes.

Koinonia

Purpose: Religious

Participation: Seniors

Schedule: Every fourth Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. except June, July, and August.

Activities: A voluntary leader directs discussion on the Bible or a related topic.

Where: Participants meet at the church; dessert is provided.

Happy Circle

Purpose: Mission outreach

Participation: Interested members of South gate provide activities once a month for 30 - 35 former Lincoln Regional Center patients.

Schedule: Once each month.

Activities: South gate members pick up former Regional Center patients from their homes and bring them together for such things as picnics, dinners, ice cream socials, polka dances, movies, crafts, games, musical entertainments, clown parties. Normally, the Fourth Presbyterian Church entertains each March with a dinner and sing fest.

South gate youth hold a bingo party once each year as well. A Christmas party is held each year in December, usually a week or two before Christmas.

Where: At the church or a location that accommodates the specific activity.

United Methodist Women

Purpose: Religious: focus on service to others Participation: Membership is open to any woman who desires to belong and to participate in the global mission of the church.

Schedule: Meetings are held the third Thursday of the month: April, June, September, November and December. All meetings are at 7:30 p.m. except for December which is at 6:30 p.m. for a Christmas salad supper.

Three small groups meet monthly:

Martha: Meets at the church on the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m.

Searchers: Meets at the church on the second Wednesday of the month at 9:00 a.m.

Sojourners: Meets at the church on the first Tuesday of the month at 2:00 p.m.

Rachel:  Meets second Saturday of the month at K’s restaurant at 7:30 am.

Activities: All activities are focused on ministries with women, children, and youth and include involvement in mission locally and globally; conducting a Prayer Chain when there are concerns to be addressed; organizing a Care Force to deliver meals to families who have a new baby or have had a family member hospitalized; conducting a Reading Program that supplies books with a variety of subject matter to encourage the adults of South Gate to read.

Odds & Ends

Purpose: Social

Participation: Designed for middle age group singles and couples

Schedule: Every third Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. A yearly schedule is set in January each year.

Activities: These depend on the interest of the participants. Often, participants meet at a restaurant and go to someone's home for dessert and conversation. On occasion, participants have traveled to locations out of Lincoln, such as Mahoney State Park and Brownville Theatre.

Where: Refer to Activities, above.

Southgaters

Purpose: Social

Participation: Designed for Seniors, 55 and older from any and all denominations throughout the city.

Schedule: Every second Monday throughout the year at noon. A short summer picnic is held in June at a local park and a dinner is held at a local restaurant in December.

Activities: A program committee plans such activities as speakers, music, and parties.

Where: The Southgaters meet at the church.

Men's Breakfast:

Purpose: Social

Participation: All adult males.

Schedule: Group is not currently meeting

Activities: Participants have breakfast and talk about topics of current and general interest to all. There is no preset agenda; it is casual.

Where:

      Youth Groups:

Children (pre-K to 5th grade):

Purpose: Religious education; family involvement

Participation: All children ages pre-K to fifth grade

Schedule: Nursery and Sunday School each Sunday. Sunday School is conducted from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.; nursery is available from 8:30 a.m. through 12:00 noon.

Vacation Church School is held during the mornings of the first week following the close of school for the summer.

Children's Choir meets most Wednesday evenings during the school year from 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Activities: In addition to those listed in the Schedule, above, children help with Mission projects such as Unicef and assist with special projects in Lincoln such as helping the Salvation Army.

Parents of those in the children's group are invited to participate in many different activities with the children. These include: Kick Off Sunday, Family Picnic, UNICEF Cookie Sales, Hanging of the Greens, Children's Christmas Program,Children's Sunday and Lent and Advent family activities.

Where: Most Children's Group activities meet at the church.

Youth (grades 6-12):

Purpose: Religious education; social; family involvement

Participation: Youth, grades 6-12

Activities and Schedule:

Youth Choir - Spirit Singers: meets most Wednesday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Confirmation Class: This class is held each year for 8th graders. Weekly classes are usually held from mid-February through early May. Confirmation for the participants is held on a Sunday just following completion of the class.

Sunday School Classes: These are held from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. each Sunday morning during the school year.

Classes are offered for youth in grade 6; grades 7 and 8; and senior high, grades 9 - 12.

Worship: Youth are encouraged to be a part of a Sunday morning worship service at either 8:30 a.m. or 10:45 a.m. Youth may be asked to serve as Lay Readers, Ushers and Communion Servers.

Youth Envelopes: Offering envelopes are provided for all youth in order to meet Nebraska United Methodist Youth goals and to help our youth develop their stewardship.

Many other activities occur at 6:30 p.m. on 2 Sunday evenings each month during the school year. These include youth outings (miniature golf, game days with nursing home residents, etc.); youth group discussions/suppers; and seasonal parties. Following second service on several different Sundays during the school year, fund raisers are held for youth activities. Every third summer, youth travel on a 10 day outreach mission to the Redbird Mission or McCurdy School.

Where: Many activities occur at South gate Church. The others occur at locations appropriate to the activity.

Tea, Talk, and Stitch:

Background: Tea, Talk, and Stitch is an offshoot of the Southgaters fellowship group. Because of a desire to keep the group size at no larger than 12, two different groups have been established.

Group 1 & Group 2

Purpose: Social

Participation: Designed for senior ladies, 55 and older from any and all denominations throughout the city.

Schedule: Group 1 meets the first Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m.

Group 2 meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m.

Activities: Participants talk about and share examples of knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, cross stitch and other sewing projects in which they are involved. They enjoy a dessert and refreshment provided by that month's hostess.

Where: Participants meet in one another's homes, rotated monthly.

               II. Community Groups

South Gate Preschool and Children's Day Out

Background: This is a program for preschoolers to kindergarteners, ages 6 months to 5 years. Children ages 2 1/2 to 5 meet together while children ages 6 months to 2 1/2 meet in the Baby/Toddler Room.

Contact:   call Mary at 489-7302 for detailed information regarding activities, costs, and registration.

Purpose: Education; social.

Schedule: Children's Day Out is offered full day (9:00 -2:45) or half day (9:00- 11:30; 12:15-2:45) Monday through Friday for children 2 1/2 - 5. The Baby/Toddler Room is available on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 9:00-11:30. This program follows the same calendar of the Lincoln Public Schools.

Where: This program is offered in the educational wing of South Gate United Methodist Church.

Cub and Boy Scouts

Background: Cub and Boy Scouts are part of the Boy Scouts of America program. Young boys ages 8 - 11 may be members of Cub Scouts; boys and young men, ages 12 to 18 may be members of Boy Scouts.

Purpose: Educational; social; citizenship; personal growth.

Schedule: Cub Scouts meet at an area school. Boy Scouts meet at South Gate each Thursday night from 7 - 8:30 p.m.
