A Parish Health Ministry focuses on the whole person to emphasize wellness, disease prevention, and health promotion, including a healthy spirituality. Care is based on the belief that health is growth toward well being and emphasizes the interrelationship of body, mind, soul, and spirit.

A Parish Nurse is a Registered Nurse with additional training in holistic ministry. The focus is to help the member of the congregation to become more aware of their health and move toward a fuller sense of wholeness.

What Parish Nurses do:

       Provide counseling on health-related issues.

Make referral information to community resources available and provide assistance in
       obtaining needed health services.

Assist members in adapting to important lifestyle changes.

Teach classes on how to maintain good health.

       Provide health screenings-BP checks.

Develop support groups within the church.

Parish nurses do not need a physician’s order and do not provide direct hands on care in the church or at a client’s home.

United Methodist view on Parish Nurse and Health Ministry.

Parish Nusring is linked with the Congregational Health Ministries of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.

Biblical heritage speaks of healing as one part of the proclaiming the Gospel. Historically Methodism has acted out this heritage by placing healing and health care as part of its ministry.

John Wesley was particularly concerned with the physical well-being of the poor. The early Methodists movement took on the tasks of funding schools, clinics, hospitals and homes for both children and elderly. In the 2000 General Conference a resolution was made which requested the Health and Welfare Unit of the General Board of Global Ministries to study issues and concerns related to health care and the rural church. It was also resolved that “churches to see health as a mission to the community, publicizing existing programs to annual conferences and investigate ways the rural church may have a more active voice in advocating rural health policy.” (The Book of Resolutions, 2000)

Parish Nurse was designed as a specialty practice by the American Nurses’ Association in 1998, and performs the role according to the NYS Nurse Practice act and practices within the Scope and Standards of Parish Nursing Practice established by the Health Ministry Association and the American Nurse Association. The course is based on the standard core curriculum developed through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center in consultation with the Nation League for Nursing and the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center.
