Our History from 1949 to 1963
Grove Park Methodist Church
During the summer of 1949 the Reverend Eugene Askew was appointed to the new
church which was now new in name, without a place of worship and a parsonage yet to be made livable. In due time Reverend Askew moved his congregation from the Fox Street Church to the recreation building of the County Park in Grove Park. There the people worshiped during the time the new building was being erected.
Even in this time of transition numbers were added to the roll of the membership and
regular services were held every Sunday. On the first Sunday in June the congregation moved into the partly completed auditorium for its first service.
Other ministers who served Grove Park were Reverend Charles Grillhe, Reverend
J. V. Speer, Reverend W. J. Atha and Reverend Wm. Hugh Cauthen.
During the Grove Park days the congregation was very active with many activities. At one revival there were 35 conversions and 24 were received into the membership of the church. The church was active until it faced the same problem as Fox Street. The neighborhood was again changing and members were moving out of the area. The small number of members left voted to relocate again, showing the strength and faith this congregation had inherited from its beginning church. The church was sold and the last service at Grove Park was Homecoming Day, September 29, 1963. |
