Our History from 1917 to 1949
Fox Street Methodist Church

In the latter part of the year 1917, prayer meetings were held in the Northwest Atlanta community of Lindsay Street, Bankhead Avenue and Jefferson Street. These were conducted by the Reverend W. M. Hunton and Brother Andrew Jenkins.
On April 18, 1918, the First Methodist Protestant Church of Atlanta was organized with 49 charter members. A tent was secured and placed at Pine Knob at the corner of Bankhead Avenue and English Avenue. This served as a church for a short time. The church grew so rapidly that it was necessary that a church be built. A lot was bought at the corner of Fox Street and Paines Avenue, a church was erected and named the Fox Street Methodist Protestant Church. Reverend Hunton was the pastor for the first six years and at the end of his ministry there it had a membership of 285.
Other ministers serving Fox Street through the years were: Reverend Dodson, Reverend F. C. Hicks, Reverend Emery Cowan, Reverend T. M. Luke, Reverend O. B. Talley, Reverend A. M. Wade, Reverend Forrest King and Reverend J. D. Booth. Each of these unselfish men of God made his own contribution to the growth and development of Fox Street Church whose membership had now grown to 327 and a multitude of friends besides its membership.  In 1939 Fox Street Church became a part of the newly organized Methodist Church and therein became a part of the North Georgia Conference.
In 1949 the building was sold after the neighborhood underwent a transition period. A lot was secured at the corner of Bankhead Avenue and Elbridge Drive (a community called Grove Park) where a beautiful stone church made from Stone Mountain granite was erected. The English Avenue Methodist Church who faced the same conditions in the changing neighborhood merged with Fox Street and became known as the Grove Park Methodist Church.
