The United Methodists have had a long heritage of mission in Seward, beginning with the Jessie Lee Home for Children. The Methodists established the Seward hospital and a TB center. The TB Center later evolved into the Wesley Center which is now a care center for elderly and disabled. The Seward Memorial United Methodist Church church, in addition to historically supporting these vital Alaska missions, has long supported missions around the world and locally. The church currently supports two local food banks and a variety of local missions. The Seeds of Faith Pre-school, The Hands Together VIM Mission, the PET project, and the local CROP Walk are four programs that have received popular support in our church and community. Seeds of Faith is a non-denominational Christian preschool that meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 till 11:30 during the school year. We enroll 15 children, ages 3-5 years. Our mission is for the children to experience the joy of learning and God’s love. Hands Together is a mission of medical and social services in Rio Bravo, Mexico. Over the past few years, a number of our members have joined up with a VIM team out of Arkansas in this loving service. CROP Walk is a hunger walk sponsored by Church World Service. The last three years our congregation has coordinated the local walk in Seward, not only helping to fight hunger all over the world but also supporting The Seaman's Mission and He Will Provide, the two local food banks.
