The Smith Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church South of Eastview, Kentucky, was organized in February of 1869. The land was given by P. A. Cundiff and his sister Sarah Cundiff Smith. Men of the church cut logs on their farms and hauled them to saw mills. With the lumber, they erected the first church building.

In August, 1913, a strip of land on the east side of the church was given by Mrs. Elizabeth Pawley to complete the present lot.

The original church building was torn down in late 1945. The present sanctuary was built and dedicated in June, 1946. The Rev. W.L. Lee was the pastor at this time.

The first Sunday school rooms were built in 1961 during the pastorate of Rev. Mitchell Capps.

The Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1968 and became the United Methodist Church.

For many years prior to 1968, the Smith Chapel Church was on a 4-point Charge with Millerstown, Big Clifty, and Pleasant Grove, which was known as the Big Clifty Charge. The parsonage was a Big Clifty. In 1970, the we became a half-time church with Pleasant Grove. At first, Glendale was also on this charge. The Charge became known as the Smith Chapel Charge. In 1974, Smith Chapel and Pleasant Grove built a parsonage. Later, Glendale was replaced by Howevally. Howevally was eventually replaced by Stephensburg. By the mid 90’s, Smith Chapel went fulltime, Stephensburg was dropped from the charge and only Pleasant Grove remained.
