Smith Chapel Episcopal Church South was organized

1939

The Episcopal Church was South and the Episcopal Church North merged and became the Methodist Church

1945

The original church was not torn down until after the first week in September and the present building was completed by the first of June. The parsonage at Big Clifty was built about the same time.

1954

The WCS (Woman’s Society of Christian Service) was organized with the help of Mrs. Alice Perkins (Bro. Perkins wife.) Now know as the UMW (United Methodist Women)

1961

The first Sunday Schools were added to the sanctuary.

1961

The Methodist and the Cumberland Presbyterian met together for our Sunday School and each others worship service. Trading back and forth with each denominations literature.

1968

The Methodist Church and the United Brethren Church Merged to become the United Methodist Church.

1974

The Smith Chapel and Pleasant Grove Churches built a Parsonage.

1976

The sanctuary was carpeted.

1976

The sanctuary has central air installed.

1978

New pews and church furniture was purchased.

1980

The second addition of Sunday School rooms were added.

1984

The UMW members made a bicentennial banner.

1986

A ramp was constructed for the front entrance.

1986

A 30’ X 40’ Pavilion was built.

1986

Pulpit reversible scarf's were donated by members.

1987

The 2nd addition to the previous Sunday School rooms was transformed into a Fellowship Hall and dedicated to the memory of Rev. John O’Banion.

1987

County Water was installed in the church kitchen and bathrooms.

1989

A new deed was written with the Cumberland Presbyterian that benefited both churches.

1989

The UMW members made a banner of the Cross and Flames.

1989

Three crosses were placed at the end of the church lane in memory of Reedie Goodman by family members.

1990

70 Methodist Hymnals were donated to the church in memory or honor of people we love.

1990

Construction of a 20’ X 30’ extension on the back of the church to expand the Fellowship Hall and Sunday school rooms along with restrooms in the front entrance of the church.

1992

New front doors were installed. These were given in memory of Helen Skeeters.

1995

Parking lot was blacktopped.

Ceiling and flood lights installed for pulpit.

1995

Dedication of new entrance, cloak room and restroom given in memory of Reedie Goodman.

Ray Dupin made and donated a lectern in honor of wife Ellen Dupin.

Public Address system was given in memory of Reedie Goodman.

Coat rack was made and given to Fellowship Hall by Glenn Van Meter Jr.

Candle holders and lighter were given in memory of Rev. George Lovelace by June and Verniece McGuffin.

Robin Lovelace and her parents gave a Bible in memory of Rev. George Lovelace.

Microwave and dishwasher purchased for Fellowship Hall

Bible stand was made and given to the Sanctuary by Glenn Van Meter Jr.

Altar Cross and Candles were given in memory of Ray Dupin by friends and family. A shrub was given by June and Verniece in memory of Ray also.

1999

Mavis and Earl Hart gave a new piano in memory of their parents, Dennis and Beulah Goodman, and James E. and Essie Hart.

2000

A Bradford Pear tree was planted in the church yard in memory of Glenn Van Meter Jr. by the Forever Young Sunday School Class.

2001

The Cross and Flame emblem on the front of the church was given in memory of Glenn Van Meter Jr. by his family.

2001

Four lighted ceiling fans and window blinds for the Sanctuary were given by Mavis and Earl Hart.

2001

New siding and a new roof were purchased and installed on the church building and pavilion. This project was spearheaded by Gary Goodman.
