In preparation for our Centennial celebration, members of Smiley United Methodist Church began plans to develop a Centennial "Book" which would provide a picture of who we are and how our congregation developed over time. This  project was brought to fruition largely through the efforts of Beulah Patteson, a long time member, who now, in 2002, is our oldest member. In what will be a series based on the headings of the original brochure, we are presenting that work here on our web site so that all may learn, enjoy, and hopefully be edified and so that her work and that of those who assisted her will not go unremembered. FOREWORD For many years there has been an underlying desire, among those whose lives have been closely associated with the Smiley United Methodist Church, that a history of the Church be written. We wanted the history to be an accurate account of the life of the Congregation, but missing records and fading memories made that impossible. What we have is not a history but a story of the devotion of personalities, the great and small moments, and some events that brought us to this Centennial moment. This description of our years together may seem wordy, yet, at this moment, these are some experiences which have happened in our life which have made us who we are today. It is well for us to remember them, not only as things past, but as experiences that have brought and kept us together in the name of Jesus Christ. B.B.P.
