Greetings, in the name of our risen Lord Jesus Christ!

Peninsula-Delaware Conference Saints and Equippers have labored to harness the power of media technology to glorify God in worship.

We need to share what we’re learning.

The Cornerstone UMC family will provide our meeting place on Saturday, November 20, from 10 am to 2 pm. Boston Market will cater lunch (baked chicken, home-cooked vegetables) for $5.00 per person. Cornerstone’s worship space exemplifies media technology integration, from its spacious worship platform to the large video screen built into a central cross.

Our dialogue will be a prelude to a larger continuing education event next spring for anyone in our conference interested in sight & sound technology in worship, regardless of their level of experience.  The November 20 Sight & Sound Technology  in Worship Conference will give us all a chance to share what we’ve learned through experimenting with exciting new worship forms, complex equipment, and difficult theological questions.

Sight & Sound Technology  in Worship Conference Survey

1.      Personal & Contact Information:
a.       Name:
b.      Address, home/day phone number (e-mail address, if different from the one above):

2.      Congregation Information:
a.       Name, address & phone number:
b.      Web site address and or e-mail address (if applicable):
c.       Regular worship service that integrates sight & sound technology (day/time/location/name of the service):
d.      When did you start this service(s)?
e.       Average attendance at this service(s):
        1.      What is the attendance trend since you began the service?
 f.        What kind of people attend this service?
        1.      When you first envisioned the service, did you “target” this group? (What I’m after here is your comments on what surprised and what didn’t surprise you about how your people have responded to the service.)
g.       Besides worship, where else in your congregation have you employed sight & sound technology?

3.      Please indicate the area(s) where you have some experience:
a.       Graphic Editing & Presentation
b.      Video Editing & Presentation
c.       MIDI & Sound Reinforcement

(Please note, if you do not plan to participate in this conference but would be interested in the spring conference, please let me know and skip the rest of the survey =)

4.      Do you plan to attend the November 20, 1999 Sight & Sound Technology  in Worship Conference at Cornerstone?
    a.       What do you plan to share with others at the conference?
    b.      What do you hope to receive?

5.      As you look over the above list of invitees, can you think of anyone else in our conference (saint or equipper) I should invite?

6.      What kind of equipment/software have you purchased (or has your church purchased) as part of this experiment? (Please list all model numbers, manufacturers, configurations, prices, and dealers/suppliers.  I know this is a lot of work, but compiling an annotated list of products not only leverages the lessons we’ve learned, it takes some of the sting out of getting burned.)

7.      For each piece of equipment or software title mentioned above, briefly evaluate the product (Special features? Limitations? Would you recommend the product to another church?)

8.      Who else in your church has been involved in planning, preparing, and presenting/operating sight and sound technology in worship?

9.      Please estimate the time you and/or your media team members have invested in sight & sound technology. (I know this will be a ballpark figure.  How much time each week do you and/or other media team members spend designing the material & operating the equipment?)

10.  What sight & sound technology resources have you found helpful? (Here, I’m looking for good books, churches where media technology is working, catalogues, web sites, companies, professional magazines, etc.)

11.  Now for the harder questions:
a.       How has your integration of media technology into worship affected worship in your congregation?
b.      How have members of your congregation responded to your use of sight & sound technology in worship?
c.       How have guests (first-time visitors) in your worship services responded to your use of sight & sound
technology in worship?
d.      What advice would you give to any pastor or saint considering a foray into the media “reformation”?
e.       How do you evaluate whether the medium (PowerPoint, Projected Video, MIDI, etc.) enhances the message of the Gospel or compromises the Good News?
f.        What Scriptural promise/foundation (if any) encourages you as you blaze this trail in dark and lonely places?
g.       What encouragement have you received from the Holy Spirit in your work with media technology in worship? (Care to share a story?)
h.       Media technology comes with a high price (in terms of both time and money).  How do you justify the cost?
