Welcome!
SKYLANDS WALK
TO EMMAUS extends a
warm invitation to anyone who would like to experience this very
special event!
What is a WALK TO
EMMAUS?
Some may have seen
literature about it at District or Conference functions or seen an
article in the RELAY and wondered what this is all
about.
Is it an exercise program with lots of walking,
or a retreat that involves walking? The answer is none of the above. It
has nothing to do with walking at all. What it
has to do with is an image taken from the Bible, from the story in the
Gospel of Luke, chapter 24:13-33, (paraphrased) where, on the morning
of the resurrection, two of Jesus' disciples are walking from Jerusalem
to their village called EMMAUS. As they are walking, they encounter the
risen Christ - but they
do not know him until he breaks bread with them; as it says, "... When
he
was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and
gave
it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him" (Luke
24:30-31). It is this beautiful image of encountering Jesus on the
walk, on the journey, seeing him with new eyes, experiencing his
presence all over again that is represented in the name WALK TO EMMAUS. But, aside from the
name, what is a Walk
to Emmaus all about? Let us try to answer this way (quoted from the
booklet What is Emmaus, Upper Room Books, Nashville):
- Emmaus is designed for active church
members who want
to rekindle their faith or renew their vision.
- Emmaus
is
for people who want to grow spiritually, who simply want to
understand the Christian faith more fully and to mature
as disciples of Jesus Christ. It is for persons who want to build
up the church in love and contribute to its ministry.
- The
Emmaus Walk is mainstream in theological outlook,
it is for those who seek to follow Christ without regard to labels and
camps.
- Emmaus
is for building faith and discipleship.
- Emmaus
is for fostering unity in Christ, not for theological debate. It
tries to foster appreciation and openness to the different faith
perspectives of the participants and to bring a spirit of Christian
tolerance and charity toward others.
- Emmaus
is
a concentrated three-day course in Christianity.
How can you
find out more about it? Speak to anyone who has been on a Walk, email
one of the people on the Contacts page on
this site. They can point out a number of people to speak with,
both clergy and laity. They can also arrange for someone to come and
speak with anyone (or group) interested in learning more about this
wonderful, exciting and inspiring opportunity, available to all!
