When Methodism began local
church communities were led by laity. Clergy, far and few between, road
long circuits to inspire with their word and administer the sacraments. In
between, the churches were led by leaders of strong conviction but who did
not want to, or had not the time to become ordained. The church grew
because of these dedicated lay persons.
Our District participates in a national
program to train extraordinary leaders for their local churches and to
share within the United Methodist connection. We train, not just
preachers, but administrators, inspirers, teachers, leaders.

What is Lay Speaking? The Lay Speaking
Program of the United Methodist Church is available to active church
members and associates who wish to develop their gifts and find new ways
to serve God in their local church and community. The classes are taught
by Lay Speakers, clergy from the District, and conference staff. After
taking the Basic Lay Speaking Class, participants may apply through their
local church to become a Local Lay Speaker. After advanced training, they
may apply to become a District Certified Lay Speaker. This process allows
continuing spiritual growth and provides opportunities to assist the local
pastor, and to serve God in fellowship with others from our district.

The Lay Speaker Leadership
Team
The District Program is led and
administered by many people. Coordination comes from a few people whose
call is to serve Lay Speakers in this District. If you are interested in
being part of the leadership team
the
District Office.
We need help: Are you interested in giving
us a hand. We need people who can work as registrar for individual
classes. We need people who can host a course: which means making sure the
space is right and that people who are training to be leaders of our
churches feel welcome and supported in each class. We need people who will
make it a discipline to pray for our lay speakers and encourage them.

Lay Speakers come from all walks of
life. Our District has lay speakers from any number of ethnic and
cultural groups. Men and women. Younger and Older.
"Leading, Caring, Communicating:
that's what Lay Speakers do in ministry as The United Methodist Church
prepares to engage the world in the twenty- first
century. Lay Speakers
are committed people. They spend a lot of time and energy preparing for
ministry and serving others. Some are involved in and leading programs,
in pulpit supply, in Bible study, or in interpreting church
programs." (from Lay Speaking Ministry: Guide for Conference and
District Committee Discipleship Resources)
Let us introduce you to the Lay Speakers
of this District. This page, and it's links will grow as we get
information in the coming months.
