This is where you will get to know First Church: who we are, what we are about, and United Methodist Doctrines. Since we are new creations every day, so will this page of our church change. Come back often to see the creation unfolding... Let's grow in Christ together.
As a church growing in the 21st Century, First United Methodist Church seeks to be a congregation where each person can:
Belong
through fellowship in a caring Christian community where each individual
can feel accepted, welcomed, and connected
Believe by growing
in faith and knowledge
Become a faithful, active disciple of Jesus Christ.
With the knowledge that we work to reach these goals by being; a community, that, worships, learns, fellowships, and serves together with Jesus Christ.
Believe
The mission of our church family is to strengthen our believers and to bring others to belief in Jesus Christ by offering a variety of worship, learning, and serving opportunities. These include Sunday school for children, youth and adults at 9:00 a.m.; Disciple Bible Study; short-term Bible studies; prayer groups; Vacation Bible School; yearly confirmation classes; and several different opportunities for small group studies. We offer study groups at three local care centers weekly.
We are a worshiping community with services that strive to meet the needs of different individuals. The Saturday evening service (5:00 p.m.) is casual and relaxed, and is conducted in the warm atmosphere of our chapel. Our (8:00 a.m.) Sunday chapel worship offers a slightly abbreviated order of worship and an opportunity to worship early in the morning for those with plans for the day. Our "Living Water" Praise Service is held each Sunday at 10:15 a.m. in the new Family Life Center. This informal, come-as-you-are, service is composed of contemporary music, drama, and sound Biblical preaching. The Sanctuary Worship, also at 10:15 a.m., in the sanctuary, is a traditional United Methodist service. This service features our Chancel Choir, as well as other musical groups that perform periodically.
Throughout the Christian year, we also offer
special services. During Holy Week, there are services each day
leading up to Easter Sunday. At
Christmas, we offer several opportunities for Christmas eve communion (Childcare is provided
at the main services.) In six to eight week periods, during
Lent and prior to Advent, we offer
Wednesday evening worship opportunities, that are preceded by home cooked meals.

Become
Missions
As we seek to become even closer to
Christ, we look for ways to serve beyond our local church. Mission work camps
are made available each year, for both youth and adults. We support global
ministries, and our members become involved throughout the community with
betterment and mission projects through local organizations in addition to the
church. We are a partner church to Mucoccane United Methodist Church in
Mozambique, Africa. We serve monthly in packing food boxes for the
Bootheel Food Bank.
We have recently begun a Habitat for Humanity group which plans to build its first house in the Fall of 2007.
Volunteers in Mission teams have been to Costa Rica, Peru, Louisiana, Mississippi, and have served in Missouri disaster cleanup situations.

nationally and internationally.
Visiting Ambassadors
Our Visiting Ambassador program aims to
provide personal contact between a member of our church family and first-time
visitors to our church.
Stephen Ministry
We have trained about 15 Stephen Ministers. This program involves a one-to-one ministry by trained, caring lay persons
to those who are hurting for various reasons, whether it be loneliness, grief,
depression or other stresses of life.
