Dr. Dennis Marke has been the chief medical officer of the UMC Health and Maternity Center in Kissy Freetown, Sierra Leone, since January 1, 1997.

This clinic was established in 1947 by the Sierra Leone Annual Conference, to serve the Kissy area (an eastern area of Freetown which is the most populous of the eight wards of greater Freetown). At that time there was no general hospital and only a few private clinics.

The clinic has primarily served the women and children of the area with obstetrics facilities and care, and maternal and infant welfare services.

Over the years, because of financial constraints, the Sierra Leone Annual Conference has not been able to maintain the clinic's quality to meet the medical needs of the area.

OPERATION CLASSROOM assists Kissy Clinic to develop new programs to assist the suffering in Sierra Leone

New Nutrition Program to assist the suffering people of Sierra Leone.

Because of the war there is a lot of malnutrition in Sierra Leone. The clinic has started a nutrition program for children, mothers and pregnant women. The program provides training in making high protein meals and also offers meals to the children, mothers and pregnant women. The are presently serving 79 children and over 280 pregnant and nursing women. The program was planned for 30 in each group. Perhaps the pictures can tell the story the best.

Follow up home visitation for the discharged clients were done in October. Mothers wer found to be preparing the high protein bennimix at home for their children.

The projected cost for this program is $3,000 per month. Advance number 012602-4RA Kissy Urban and Maternity Center/Malnutrition and Outreach Program. Please inform the OC office if you are supporting this program. ocmission@compuserve.com
