Work Team Instructions:

Mitchell County does not want our survivors to be victims again.  If you suspect fraud, report it immediately to the crew chief.  Please understand, many victims are hurt, angry, and very tired -- they probably will not be very friendly.  Please respect their loss and offer compassion but be sensitive that they may want to be left alone.  Respect their loss and treat your work with reverence and kindness.   Treat them as you would want to be treated, with love and compassion.**

  1. Carpenters & Roofers - If you're working on a roof or structural house projects, don't start a job you can't finish.

  2. Debris Removal -- Much of the debris is around the houses.  Make sure you have sturdy work boots or work shoes & work gloves.  If you are able bring a wheelbarrow or bucket to put debris in please do.  Debris should be moved to the right of way for pickup by the county.

  3. Don't move anything off the property unless the property owners have documented with photographs what you are moving.  (Party Chiefs will have automatic cameras.) THIS IS IMPORTANT

  4. Don't work at a place you are not assigned unless you have confirmed that they have signed a permission form for us to work on their property.  We cannot work where we do not have the owner's permission.  **THIS IS IMPORTANT** Party chiefs can confirm this with the command center and will also have permission slips with them.   Stay with your crew chief.

  5. Be self sufficient -- Plan your meals, have a place to stay BEFORE you come.  Bring tools and gloves. Chainsaws are needed.  IT's HOT - Bring Water & beverages.

  6. For non manual laborers - let us know you cannot do heavy work and we will have something else for you to do.

  7. For Saturday and Sunday report to Centennial Stadium (Stay on 19 until you see the officers directing traffic near a BP station and Stone's Building Supply.)   All other days, report to the Volunteer Command Center at 912-336-7963.    When you arrive, remain in  your vehicle and send your leader in for you assignment.  Please have the form at the bottom filled out and hand to the person at the volunteer dispatch center tables.  We will work diligently to keep your group together.

  8. Buses will be available to transport people coming in small groups to the sites.  Please be clear when you sign in the times you will be available to work.

  9. Local crew chiefs will be leading groups. When projects are completed report back to the crew chief what has been accomplished.

  10. We don't have babysitters, you are responsible for  your children.   Some areas are very dangerous and not recommended for young children.  THIS IS HARD WORK -- BE READY.

  11. Please don't throw away photos.  We're sending them to the Methodist Church Lost-And-Found in hopes of finding their owners.  Victims have lost everything, if we can save a memory, its a good thing.

Thank you.  We appreciate your help.  Please understand the protection, preservation and restoration of these victims is our top priority.

Cleanup Instructions

Make sure the volunteer team has a permission from the owner. If a site is slated for demolition, the work will be done by contractors, not volunteers.  If a site will be rebuilt without demolition, you may assist.

Debris must be moved to the right of way for government debris trucks to pick up.   Please check the website or volunteer coordinators for guidelines.

Go inside house carefully.  If the door sticks at the top, it could mean that the ceiling or house is ready to fall.  You can force the door open, but wait outside the doorway for a minute so you'll be protected if something falls.  Look carefully at the ceiling before you enter to be sure it is not ready to fall. Step careful, watch for slipper floors, loose flooring, holes, nails, and class.  Make sure to wear sturdy work shoes to protect your feet.

Cover holes in roof, walls, or windows with boards, tarps, or plastic sheeting. Use 4 x 4's to brace weak areas. Clear out trash and debris from house. Check for broken or leaking water pipes. Shovel out as much debris as possible. Use sprayer to hose walls, air ducts, etc.  Disinfecting with 1/4 cup of bleach per 1 gallon of water.

Volunteers are also being organized through the Chamber of Commerce of Camilla.

Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.
