Let my prayer be counted as incense before thee, and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice! - Psalm 141:2

About Taizé

Taizé as a community and prayer began in 1940 by Brother Roger in France , and is now made up of over a hundred brothers from Catholic and various Protestant backgrounds from more than twenty-five nations. Taizé sees itself as a community of reconciliation between divided Christians and separated peoples. St. Anne’s Church in Gorham hosts a Taizé (pronounced “Teh-ZAY”) service on the second Sunday of each month.

Prayers for Peace

These prayers are from the Sacred Space prayer site and represent prayers for peace from the major world religions:

A Buddhist Prayer

Evoking the presence of the great compassion, let us fill our hearts with our own compassion - towards ourselves and towards all living beings. Let us pray that all living beings realise that they are all brothers and sisters, all nourished from the same source of life.

A Muslim Prayer

O God! O our Master! You are eternal life and everlasting peace by your essence and attributes. The everlasting peace is from You and it returns to You. O our Sustainer! Grant us the life of true peace and usher us into the abode of peace. O Glorious and Bounteous One! You are blessed and sublime.

A Jewish Prayer

Cause us, O Father, to lie down in peace, and rise again to enjoy life. Spread over us the covering of your peace, guide us with your good counsel and save us for the sake of your name. Be a shield about us, turning away every enemy, disease, violence, hunger and sorrow. Shelter us in the shadow of your wings, for you are a God who guards and protects us, a ruler of mercy and compassion…. Blessed are you, Lord, who spreads the shelter of peace over us, over His people Israel, and over all the world.

A Jain Prayer

Lead me from death to Life, from falsehood to Truth.
Lead me from despair to Hope, from fear to Trust.
Lead me from hate to Love, from war to Peace.
Let Peace fill our heart, our world, our universe.

- Satish Kumar

A Sikh Prayer

By the grace of God's name
May humanity find itself lifted higher and higher.
In thy dispensation O Lord
Let there be good in all humanity.

A Hindu Prayer

Oh God, lead us from the unreal to the Real. Oh God, lead us from darkness to light. Oh God, lead us from death to immortality. Shanti (Peace), Shanti, Shanti unto all. Oh Lord God almighty, may there be peace in celestial regions. May there be peace on earth. May the waters be appeasing. May herbs be wholesome, and may trees and plants bring peace to all. May all beneficent beings bring peace to us. May thy peace itself bestow peace on all, and may that peace come to me also.

  A Baha'i Prayer

Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be fair in thy judgement, and guarded in thy speech. Be a lamp unto those who walk in darkness and a home to the stranger. Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light to the feet of the erring. Be a breath of life to the body of humankind, a dew to the soil of the human heart and fruit upon the tree of humility.

 Christian Prayer of St Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me sow love.
Where there is injury; pardon.
Where there is doubt; faith.
Where there is despair; hope.
Where there is darkness; light.
Where there is sadness; joy.

Prayers and Resources for Prayer

Psalm 34:1 -
" I will bless the Lord at all times:
His praise shall continually be in my mouth. "

    The Lord's Prayer

    Jesus said to his disciples: 'When you pray, say this:
    Our Father who art in heaven
    Hallowed be Thy name.
    Thy kingdom come.
    Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
    Give us this day our daily bread.
    Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
    Lead us not into temptation,
    And deliver us from evil.
    For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen
    - Matthew 6:9-13

    Glory Be to the Father (Gloria Patri)

    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
      as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

    Prayer of Serenity

    God
    grant me the Serenity
    to accept the things I
    cannot change;

    Courage to change the
    things I can; and

    Wisdom to know the
    difference.

    Living one day at a time;
    Enjoying one moment at a
    time; Accepting hardship
    as the pathway to peace;

    Taking, as He did, this
    sinful world as it is, not
    as I would have it;
    Trusting that He will make
    all things right if I
    surrender to His will;

    That I may be reasonably
    happy in this life, and
    supremely happy with Him
    forever in the next.
    Amen.

     - Reinhold Niebuhr, 20th Century

    Morning Prayer

    My Heavenly Father, I thank You, through Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son, that You kept me safe from all evil and danger last night. Save me, I pray, today as well, from every evil and sin, so that all I do and the way that I live will please you. I put myself in your care, body and soul and all that I have. Let Your holy Angels be with me, so that the evil enemy will not gain power over me. Amen.

    - Martin Luther, 16th Century

    Evening Prayer

    My Heavenly Father, I thank You, through Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son, that You have protected me, by Your grace. Forgive, I pray, all my sins and the evil I have done. Protect me, by Your grace, tonight. I put myself in your care, body and soul and all that I have. Let Your holy angels be with me, so that the evil enemy will not gain power over me. Amen.

    Martin Luther, 16th Century

    Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace;
    where there is hatred, let me sow love;
    where there is injury, pardon;
    where there is doubt, faith;
    where there is despair, hope;
    where there is darkness, light;
    and where there is sadness, joy.
    O Divine Master,
    grant that I may not so much seek
    to be consoled as to console;
    to be understood, as to understand;
    to be loved, as to love;
    for it is in giving that we receive,
    it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
    and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

    St. Francis of Assisi, 13th century

    Most high, glorious God
    enlighten the darkness of my heart
    and give me, Lord,
        a correct faith,
        a certain hope,
        a perfect charity,
        sense and knowledge,
    so that I may carry out
    your holy and true command.

    Francis of Assisi, 13th century

    Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve You as You deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to ask for reward save that of knowing I am doing Your Will.

    St. Ignatius Loyola, 15th century

    Study of Praying Hands by Albrecht Durer from www.artrenewal.org/articles/2002/ Parkhurst/parkhurst5.asp

    Dear Friends,

          Sandy Dunton, Justine and myself have been serving on a Committee to raise funds for the MacPherson family. The next two pages in this newsletter are copies of the mailing we have been      sending out. They explain why the money is needed. To date we have raised over $16,000.

         We did not want to give out the mailing list here at School Street and decided we would have a special collection and forward the money to the National Transplant Assistance Fund in the name of the School Street United Methodist Church.

         As of this writing, Jean has had her transplant; and thank God, she has come through the surgery and is doing very well. Now expenses for future treatment and medicines really begin to mount!

         On Sunday, October 12th, we will be having a special collection for Jean and would request that your donation on that Sunday be placed in an envelope marked “Jean”. Checks can be made payable to the School Street UMC. If you can’t make it to church on that day, would you please send your donation to: Church Secretary, School Street UMC

       P.O. Box 607

      Gorham, ME 04038

         Thank you so much for any assistance you can give. If there was ever a benevolence that was close to home and close to the heart, this is it. Thank you on behalf of Jean and Andrew.
