The work of Church of the Saviour
Our mission
The body of Christ, the church, exists for the people of the world, whom God
loves very much, enough to have sent God’s son, Jesus, to die for our
redemption. The purpose of Church of the Saviour is to make disciples for Jesus
Christ. When persons join Church of the Saviour, they promise to uphold the
denomination and the congregation with their prayers, presence, gifts and
service.
Our approach
Church of the Saviour works to make disciples for Jesus Christ through a core
process of four parts: Radical hospitality, passionate worship, nurturing
relationships and learning, and risk-taking mission and service.
The circle
As we welcome, relate with, strengthen, and send disciples for Jesus Christ,
a circle of sorts forms. We welcome persons – they are nurtured and
strengthened – they go out to witness of Christ and invite others into the
community of faith. To be a part of the circle of faith life is the most
important, and most exciting, activity on earth.
We witness
By word and deed we bear witness to the good news of God’s love, both to
one another in the congregation and to other persons in the community. We let
others know what God has done in our lives. This sharing calls on us to reach
out to people, to listen to them and speak with them, to reach out in care and
compassion. It means inviting family, friends, classmates, co-workers and
neighbors to visit our congregation – or better yet, to bring them.
We worship
As part of our mission we gather to worship the living God. We come into a
service of worship expecting to meet God. We speak to God, and we listen for
God. Worship is a time of praise and celebration. We remember God’s work and
give thanks. We remember the gift of Jesus Christ, alive now in among us. We
acknowledge and yield to the Holy Spirit, the legacy of Christ to the church. We
also make connections between the Bible and our lives. We bring the prayers of
our hearts for our lives, our community and world.
We learn
Through Sunday School, Bible studies and other Christian education
opportunities, we continue our growth and learning. The primary purpose of
Christian education in The United Methodist Church is to deepen our faith in God
and to strengthen our expression of that faith in daily discipleship in the
community. With the guidance of a teacher and the support of a class of
Christian friends, we build a bridge between God’s Word and current life.
We minister
In The United Methodist Church both clergy and laity are
"ministers" wherever they go. We minister informally through our
everyday contacts with family and friends, at school or work, and in our
communities. Much of our ministry is accomplished in groups, teams or
committees. We partner with community groups, agencies and other congregations.
We give our time, our energy, our money.
We give
To belong to Church of the Saviour is to be a
Christ-like steward. In Jesus’
parables a steward is a servant charged by the master with caring for the master’s
property. Though the steward does not own the property, he or she is responsible
for it and accountable to the master. We receive from God gifts of many kinds,
and we are grateful for those gifts and try to manage them wisely, for our own
good, the good of others, and for God’s glory. As stewards we try to manage
our time, our talents and our treasures wisely and generously for the kingdom of
God. We find that giving of our financial treasure is most joyful and effective
when we give a definite proportion of our income through the church –
"off the top," not what is "left over" at the end of the
month. For many this proportion is one-tenth, or a tithe.
