Essential Truths for United Methodists
From The Book of Discipline
We are baptized
We believe that baptism is a sacrament ordained by Christ, a sign of God’s grace and a pledge of our faith.
We believe that through baptism we are initiated into the fellowship of the church.
We believe that there are several valid modes of baptism – sprinkling, pouring and immersion.
We believe in baptism of infants and children, for it is God, not we, who takes the initiative in bringing us to faith.
We believe in God
We entrust our lives, all that we are, to the living God.
We know that God is one and indivisible, but we meet God in three "persons" as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We believe that God creates and sustains all that is.
We believe that God loves humankind, much as a parent loves a child.
We believe that God suffers when creation suffers, especially when people are hurt.
We believe that our motives and actions are judged by God’s own righteous standards.
We confess our sin
We confess that though we are created in the image of God, we often turn our backs on God, separate ourselves, putting our own will at the center of life.
We confess that we also separate ourselves from other people, from God’s created order, and from our own best selves.
We confess this separation as sin. We find that we cannot save ourselves from this predicament. We yearn for reunion with God, for redemption, for salvation.
We believe in Jesus Christ
We believe in Jesus as God’s Son, as the one in whom God was wholly incarnate.
We believe in Jesus as fully human, God’s picture of what it means to be a mature person.
We believe in Jesus as the Christ, that is, as the Messiah expected by the Jews, and as God’s Chosen One for all times, all peoples.
We believe in Jesus as Lord of our lives and Lord of our times, and give him our devoted allegiance.
We believe, individually, in Jesus as our Savior, the one through whom God has freed each of us from sin.
We are saved
We believe in salvation as a reunion with God, and thus also with others, the natural world, and ourselves. We believe we are made whole again through God’s grace.
We believe that we are saved, not by our own doing, but by God’s amazing love, God’s grace, as through faith we accept this love.
We believe in conversion – that as we are saved by God we are turned around and set on a new course, each reborn to a new life in Christ, and heir to eternal life.
We believe that we can continue to grow in grace, toward holiness of heart and life, and toward perfect love.
We rely on the Bible
We believe in the bible as God’s Word, our primary source of belief, our primary authority for action.
We believe that the biblical writers were inspired by God. We believe that the early church was guided by God in selecting the most faithful and useful books as holy scripture.
We believe that the Holy Spirit is at work today in our thoughtful reading of the scripture, individually and with other Christians.
We believe in using the Bible on a regular basis, continuing to grow in our understanding and application of the scripture.
We are nourished in Holy Communion
We believe that Communion is a sacrament ordained by Christ, a sign of God’s grace and a pledge of our faith.
We believe that in Communion we remember and celebrate Christ’s self-giving sacrifice on the cross – and are penitent for ways we crucify Him even today.
We believe that in Communion we remember and celebrate Christ’s resurrection – and give thanks for his lively presence in the church and the world.
We believe that in Communion we celebrate Christ’s final victory, God’s coming reign – and our own partnership with Christ in the dawning kingdom.
We follow the Holy Spirit
We believe that the New Testament church was created and sustained by the Holy Spirit.
We believe in the Holy Spirit as God’s touch, God’s personal activity in the church, among Christian friends, and with each of us individually.
We believe that the Holy Spirit guides each of us, comforts us, and strengthens us.
We believe that the Holy Spirit’s work in each of our lives has brought new fruit and has given various gifts.
We live as disciples
We believe in following Christ as disciples in the world He loves.
We believe that true faith shows itself in moral action and in ministry, both personal and social.
We intend to act out our discipleship in society in ways consistent with our United Methodist Social Creed .
We believe that our discipleship must be rooted in faith and prayer and must be shaped by adequate preparation and strict discipline.
We believe that we are accountable to God through the Christian community for our discipleship.
We expect God’s reign
We trust in God as the Lord of the future, beckoning us into a new age that is already dawning.
We believe in the Old Testament vision of shalom, God’s promise of a world of harmony and righteousness, of liberation, justice, and order.
We believe in Jesus’ vision of the coming kingdom, the coming reign of God in human hearts and all human affairs.
We believe that the church is a sign of the future.
We believe in praying and watching for the kingdom, in putting on our new nature, and in doing the work of ministry.
We are the church
We believe in the church as Christ’s body, God’s household, as a fellowship of believers, and as a community of faith.
We believe in Church of the Saviour as a faithful though imperfect manifestation of Christ’s holy church.
We believe in Church of the Saviour’s mission to the community in which it is set, and we intend to take part in that ministry.
We believe in The United Methodist Church and pledge to uphold it in our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service.
We believe in Christ’s worldwide church, the fellowship of all who acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior. We take part in the Spirit’s work of restoring wholeness to this broken body.
