Our Story

Methodism began in Sarcoxie around 1838. The current church building was built in 1910 as the Methodist Episcopal Church South. When the ME Church North and the ME Church South united in 1939, the decision was made to sell the church building used by the ME North and use the current building as the Church building. In 1950 the fellowship hall and classrooms were added onto the older building. In 1981 the sanctuary was remodeled and that fall the basement was redecorated.

The United Methodist Church is a connectional church. That means we are connected to all other United Methodist churches around the United States and around the world in mission and ministry to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to the whole world. The founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley, claimed for himself and Methodists of all times that the world is our parish. We join with other United Methodist churches to send missionaries all over the globe.

We are united through our United Methodist Women's groups. Our local group meets the second Thursday each month at 6:30 for fellowship and spiritual growth. They also provide money for missions through their programs. Our UMW is open to all women.

We are also united in the way our pastors are deployed throughout the church. In Methodism we use the appointment system, whereby the various pastors are sent out by the bishop and the district superintendents of our conference, which includes the entire state of Missouri. We also are united in educating our ministers through United Methodist seminaries and other educational programs.

Baptism is an outward sign of the work God is doing within the heart and life of the individual. Because we believe God never stops working in an individual, we believe baptism is only to be done once. We recognize baptisms from other Christian denominations.

Holy Communion is a gift from God. It is open to all persons who desire to be fed at the Lord's Table. Membership in our church is not required for a person to receive this free gift from God.

Worship and Study Opportunities

We are a friendly, Bible-believing congregation. We use a traditional worship. We have a desire to serve God as we believe He directs us. We also desire to serve our community in a variety of ways. We also participate in the local Christian Alliance.

We have both a handbell choir and a vocal choir. Both welcome anyone who wishes to share their talents with others and for God.

We have two adult Sunday School classes, the Delta Alpha Class and the Mr. & Mrs. Class. We also have one class for elementary aged children and one Youth class. The youth class is for junior and senior high and also college students. All Sunday school classes meet at 9:45 a.m.

As a church, we support two children through Compassion, International. One is a boy living in Kenya and the other is a boy living in Guatemala. This support is provided through a once per month "Noisy Offering" collected by our youth.

We have a hamburger stand at the annual Chief Sarcoxie Days weekend, which is the second weekend of September. This is located on the square here in Sarcoxie. The first Saturday in November we put on a Community Thanksgiving Dinner. This is held in our Fellowship Hall. Both of these events are affordable for nearly anyone to come and enjoy.

We invite you to come and visit us anytime and see if we are what you are looking for as a church home and a place to draw closer to God.
