United Methodist Women (UMW)This historic women's mission group has its roots in the Women's Foreign Missionary Society that began in the Eastern States after the end of the Civil War. Women donated pennies from their household accounts and egg money - enough to build the first Woman's Hospital in India. They also paid to educate Dr. Clara Swain and Isabella Thornburn. Dr. Swain started the women's hospital where women, who were not allowed to be in the presence of a man who was not a relative, got first hand treatment for illnesses. Dr. Thornburn started a women's school and university in India. Both of these institutions still stand and are still serving the women of India. Salem's UMW group meets once a month and is led by their current President, Laurel Skomer. They study and support various mission and educational opportunities, as well as provides Christian fellowship for the women of Salem.
Men's Activity Group (MAG)Our Men's Activity Group started as an offshoot of our Women's Activity group within the last two years by men who wanted to get together with their Salem friends and have fun. MAG meets about three to four times a year. Recent trips have included a tour of the Automotive museum in Volo, IL.
Women's Activity Group (WAG)Our Women's Activity Group started two years ago by women who wanted to get together with their Salem friends and have fun. Once a month, WAG provides an activity open to women of all ages. These activities vary between going to see an open air production of Oklahoma, to creating pottery, to playing Bunko. Leadership is rotated with each activity. |
