CROP Walk for Hunger

Fonda Gormer, CROP Walk Coordinator

Once each year, usually the last Sunday afternoon in September, Salem hosts the Wolfsville/Myersville CROP Walk for hunger. The 5-mile walk along Wolfsville area roads raises money for hunger programs, both locally and globally. The walk begins at Salem Church (where registration is held), and follows a loop, along Pleasant Walk Road, Dog Road, Loy Wolfe Road, Black Rock Road, and Wolfsville Road, ending back at Salem Church. Several weeks prior to the event, walkers ask for pledges to sponsor them in the walk. Some get pledges and do not walk, some walk without sponsors, and others raise funds through matching funds by employers. Walkers from six local Wolfsville area churches are faithful participants in this annual event. Funds raised help stock local food bank shelves and provide emergency relief throughout the world.

Food Boxes & Fruit Baskets

Two times each year, at Easter and Christmas, the church prepares food boxes and fruit baskets which are given to families in the community and surrounding areas. Salem's Outreach Chairperson solicits names of area families in need of food and each family is given a box of donated food items from Salem's food bank, a turkey, a bag of potatoes, and fresh fruit. The church also gives fruit baskets to those who have had recent tragedies or serious illness or are grieving the loss of a loved one. It is a way the church family can show God's love to its dear friends and neighbors. Also, at Christmas, poinsettias, and, at Easter, lilies, are distributed to community members who enjoy the beauty and cheer of fresh flowers.

Food Pantry

Salem has a food pantry of commercially canned or packaged items, located on the second floor of the educational building. The church provides food items on a weekly or monthly basis to needy families in the Wolfsville community and surrounding area.

Nursing Home Visits

Several times each year, the Salem church family conducts a worship service at the Reeders Memorial Home on Main Street in Boonsboro, MD. The Mountain Shepherd and Sunday worship bulletin will include the scheduled dates for the services at Reeders.

  Showing God's Love

The scriptures tell us that God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not parish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

Since God showed us His great love in Christ, we also desire to show His love in our community and beyond, by helping people in need.
